The Lexington County Museum, located in downtown Lexington, offers a rare and unforgettable experience – the chance to see and touch a way of life gone forever. The Museum interprets and exhibits historic structures and artifacts that tell the story of everyday life for Lexington County citizens in the colonial and antebellum period and contains many everyday items people used in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Museum features over 30 historic structures on seven acres. Some of these include the Leaphart/Harman house, built around 1790; the Corley Cabin, the oldest documented building in Lexington; the Ernest Hazelius House, where the traditional song "Give Me That Old Time Religion" was composed, and the two story-John Fox House, built in 1832. Originally built by Jesse Bates, John Fox, a wealthy planter and politician, bought the house in 1843. Currently, it is furnished with period pieces from Lexington County that show how an upper class home would have been decorated around the mid-nineteenth century. The Museum serves as an invaluable educational tool by promoting the county's history and attracting school groups. The Museum offers thirteen hands-on tours to school groups for free.

This is a quaint museum located in Lexington. I've gone a few times now with my kids on field trips. There are activities geared toward life in the the pioneer times. It's worth the trip.

We recently toured the Lexington County Museum while visiting friends in Prosperity, SC. It is a well kept collection of structures, many moved from elsewhere in the county, filled with period furniture and fixtures. The collection of old quilts was amazing alone. Our guide was...More

Local history museums tend to be, well, deadly. This is an exception. Sitting on 6 acres, the museum consists of ten authentic homes from the 1770 through 1860. Many of the structures were moved to the museum over the years, from various parts of the...More

I did the tour which is only $5 for adults. Our guide did way too much talking about himself and went into a little more detail about banal facts than I would care to hear. In general, it was very interesting to find out who...More

Thanks for the review! We're always trying to improve so we appreciate the feedback. We've already purchased two portable PA systems so that should help with the hearing problems the next time we put on the tour. We're glad you enjoyed the tour overall though....More
