A fascinating opportunity to visit a working historical conservation lab. This is the home of the H L Hunley submarine, it is clearly visible submerged in its tank of protective solution at weekends. Tours are only at the weekend as conservation work is ongoing on weekdays. The tours is highly recommended ($16 for adults) and very informative. The job they... More

In the heart of the former Charleston Naval Shipyard lies a working lab which houses the H.L. Hunley, a Civil War submarine. The shipyard itself is quite a wonder, having been decommissioned twenty years ago. There are some private businesses that continue here, but many of the buildings lie dormant. I took the public bus here and it just dropped... More

The Warren Lasch Conservation Center is located on the former Charleston Naval Base. Not is the best area of town. What they have done here to restore and tell the story of the Hunley and its crew is amazing. Tours of the Hunley are on Sat/Sun only. However, if you are in the area, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND visiting to see... More

Fascinating tour showing the ongoing work to completely salvage the CSS Hunley. Amazing progress has been made, but there are thousands of hours of work and research to be done. The art and science of undersea archeaology is clearly still developing.

The center houses a museum of sorts with lots of interactive displays, a Pioneer Sub replica, mock-ups of the Hunley that you can climb into, movies, artifacts and best of all, The H.L. Hunley itself! They have a great gift shop too. Come for a couple of hours and enjoy the trek through history.

Got a Groupon, so it was a good value. Sat and Sun only. Good guided tour. Lots if interesting stuff, and great displays, but can't see the sub. It's behind plexiglass in a tank of solution and dimly lit. You can barely make it out. I was disappointed. I wish they would put more underwater lights in the tank. Maybe... More

The conservation center is on the old Charleston Naval Base, DO NOT go to the modern weapons facility or JB Charleston. There are few signs to direct you so type in 1250 Supply St. The building is off the road near the Clemson Research center. The only give tours on the WEEKEND. You can't photograph the submarine. There is a... More

Please see my review under the subject, H. L. Hunley Confererate Civil War submarine. It's well worth the visit, and reservations might be necessary depending on the time or day.

Interesting visit and interesting to learn about the H.L. Hunley. Lots of exhibits. The only thing is that you cannot see the Hunley. It's submerged in a vat of caustic fluid. You look at it from above, but with the glass doors you can't even get close enough to see it well or take a good photo. The docents shared... More
