Hidden Gem

This is a hidden gem. It is a long ride down a tree lined road and then you come to this fort... You get to walk through the fort. What a great find.

Pretty interesting historical site. Off the beaten path. Not an attended site, just offers multiple signs as to what you are looking at.

My husband and I visited Fort Fremont on the fourth Saturday of February. There is a free guided tour on the fourth Saturday of every month starting at 10:30am in the St. Helena Island Library. The Friends of Fort Fremont (FFF) volunteer their time to give their guests a wonderful 40 min executive overview PowerPoint presentation at the nearby library,... More

Very good history with the batteries. Glad to see information about each battery. Do wish they would do something about the graffiti. Remember flash light. On the far end is a beach access.

The concrete fortress is located off the beaten track but definitely worth a visit. The landscape is somewhat maintained but other than that the place has been allowed to slowly deteriorate. YOU WILL NEED A FLASHLIGHT to see inside the many rooms. There is no one on site and there is no charge to visit.

Visited in off season so no bugs! No people either. Not a soul to be found, some hurricane damage in area has mostly been cleaned up. Some signage in front of each ruin helps identify and explain some of the buildings. Some areas are quite precarious - keep little kids near you at all times. You can learn more about... More

I felt the place is beautiful. I was just a little disappointed that each structure was not labeled with what it was or how each structure was used. Also, we tried to find the portion of the original hospital. I think we found it, but I would have liked that structure to have been marked better.

Thank you for your comment. We hope you will visit again when you are in the area. This fall, we have added several descriptive signs. And the groundbreaking for our new Visitors Interpretive Center is promised for 2017. Please see our website for more information. More

Had never heard of this fort, found it on Trip Advisor. So glad we did. Different than any fort we've ever been to. Well maintained with a beautiful stretch of beach in front of it. Great for walking and learning.

Although we went on a sunny afternoon, the out-of-the-way location, the ruins overgrown with vegetation and the eerie silence gave us a spooky experience. This fort was built in the 1890's but the present, poor condition makes you feel as if you're at an ancient Mayan site. Just beyond the ruins is the ocean and a lovely beach to which... More

This is an interesting place to visit. We mostly use it for access to the beach on the river but It's got some historical appeal. Built for protection during the Spanish American war but never really used. No saftey railings so keep a close eye on your kids
