The Chapel is now closed for the season. We hope to see you May 1st when we open for 2017! Replica of the 850-year-old Borgund Church in Norway and has unique architecture and woodcarvings.

We saw a brochure and decided to go. It is incredibly beautiful- the buildings, grounds, folks who worked the gift shop, information. It is free but they accept donations for upkeep. If you miss this you will kick yourself!

We had just returned from a Norway trip in the spring and were thrilled to see this stave church in Rapid City! Beautifully done to perfection. The volunteer staff were full of information and were great to talk to about the area activities and history....More

It is a fun kitschy place in the hills that I didn't know was even there for a lot of years. Glad I finally ran across it. Great place to take some pictures and a few little trails to go on. Lovely place

Lovely wood carved chapel plus short meditation walk. Beautiful, peaceful, outstanding details on the chapel. Free but donations requested. Well worth the side trip.

This was a serene spot on the hill. The chapel itself has a short audio presentation (3-4 minutes) that runs every few minutes, which you can listen to while sitting in the chapel. This is worth the brief time because it points out the symbolism...More

If you're in Rapid City, stop and look at the Chapel in the Hills. It is surrounded by woods and the grounds are well taken care of. The church itself is incredibly beautiful!

We would like to explain that we are a registered non-profit and are totally dependent on visitors' donations and gifts to remain open. We receive no funding from our state or national Lutheran Church Body. Yes, it seems a bit awkward asking for donations and...More

The lady at the gift shop explained the history to us. It is a very beautiful building. The little museum is also very nice.

Most folks who come to South Dakota's Black Hills make a beeline for Mount Rushmore and then, having made that obligatory trip, head off to any of the hundreds of other "touristy" spots that litter the foothills outside Rapid City. If it were not for...More

One of the best Scandinavian Chapels there is. A must see if you are in Rapid City. Authentic and a delight for all ages. The gift shop offers some great things to take back home too.

There are ramped sidewalks leading to and into the chapel, gift shop, and museum. The slopes are rather steep in some places, due to the nature of the terrain. To access the restrooms, there is one step up.
