The South Devon Railway is one of the West Country’s best loved tourist attractions and is the longest established steam railway in the region. The former GWR branch line runs along the stunning valley of the Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes on a 14 mile round trip. The steam trains offer a wonderful all day, all weather attraction for families and people of all ages. The railway also has a fascinating museum, gardens, riverside walk, locomotive restoration workshops, a gift and model railway shop, refreshment rooms and more. Free car parking at Buckfastleigh, just off the A38, midway between Exeter and Plymouth; Totnes is a 500 yard walk from the main line station.

A lovely old steam train that meanders it's way through the countryside from Buckfastleigh to Totnes. We sat in an old fashioned carriage which brought back many memories. Wonderful.

We visited the railway during the 6 weeks holiday and whilst we enjoyed the train ride we were disappointed that all the extras such as the miniature railway, garden railway etc. were all closed. The brochure stated these were open at "peak" times, which I...More

Combine your ticket with the cost of entrance to Totnes Rare Breeds Farm and you have a great day out. The train journey in original old coaches pulled by a steam engine along the banks of the River Dart is nostalgic and of stunning scenery....More

Well maintained by enthusiasts there is an active timetable between Buckfastleigh and Totnes running ex-GWR stock mainly. There are also many items of rolling stock and motive power awaiting 'attention/renovation' at the station area and worthy of a nose around! Also an interesting platform museum...More

Well kept and loved by its volunteers and visitors. Suggest you go from Buckfastleigh to Totnes, have an hour or so in the, very 70's feel, town then get back on the train and return to Buckfastleigh and head for the abbey. That filled our...More

Not sure about play area but there is the butterfly and otter centre next to the Buckfastleigh Station or the rare breeds centre next to Totnes Station. Children and adults alike will be delighted by either of these.
