The remains of the largest castle in Devon. Begun soon after the Norman Conquest as a motte and bailey castle with a stone keep, it was converted into a more sumptuous residence in the 14th century by Hugh Courtenay, Earl of Devon. After the last Courtenay owner fell foul of Henry VIII in 1538, it declined into an allegedly haunted ruin. Riverside picnic area and woodland walks within the grounds and nearby. Dog friendly and child friendly.

Arrived at the this very impressive site, originally built around the Norman conquest although in ruins, gives you an insight into the lives of previous owners through the centuries. On entry you are offered a small audio transmitter which you push the relevant numbers to locations around the site. You get a an idea of what the buildings were for... More

My two boys (aged 4 and 6) and I had a great time exploring this castle. the views from the top were amazing but I had to keep tight hold of the boys due to the steep drop and no fencing. the boys even listened as I read snippets from the information boards on the way round. A great way... More

We were looking for somewhere quieter to go this bank holiday, stay away from the crowds! This was the perfect place. It is a beautiful setting. The castle itself (and grounds) is very small and I could see that some people might not feel it is worth visiting (time wise.) We took the audio guides which make it so worthwhile,... More

This place was stunning when I visited in May 2014. Beautiful wildflower meadow next to the castle, wish I had a picnic there. Bluebells carpeting the woodland floor. Nice guy at the desk, really pleasant and helpful. I would visit again as I did not feel badgered into membership, usually in general when that happens I will avoid going to... More

We visited the castle as a stop off on our way home from Cornwall, and it was a very successful visit. The member of staff on duty was very helpful and suggested audio guides for myself and the children. The audio guide kept even my youngest entertained, and we all had an interesting time, learning plenty as well. There were... More

We enjoyed our Sunday afternoon autumn visit. The staff were very friendly and informative. Audio tour a great idea too! We were lucky with the weather. Not a wet day activity.
