Mapperton is a glorious sandstone manor house and romantic valley garden deep in a lost Dorset combe among tumbling hills and unspoiled countryside. Fifteen acres of gardens descend from the croquet lawn, through the formal topiary down to the wild garden. Mapperton is the home of the Earl and Countess of Sandwich, and welcomes visitors to the Gardens from 1 March to 31 October, to the House from 2 April to 31 October, and to the Sawmill Cafe from 2 April to 31 October.

Mapperton is a gem. Interesting house with good guided tour, not too long not too short. Beautiful setting and the gardens, hidden below the house, were a delightful surprise. Had a terrific home cooked snack lunch in the Sawmills Cafe. Everything was home made and...More

Visited yesterday - mainly for the annual plant fair but also to take advantage of a rare opportunity to see the inside of the house, which was fascinating. My rating reflects my opinion of the house and plant fair (we didn't visit the garden on...More

This old manor house is full of interesting things and the two guides were just delightful. The gardens are stunning and we will definitely visit again soon.

As member of the National Trust, we are used to be regaled with amazing properties and their histories. It seems that the owners of Mapperton don't seem to know quite what to do with it. Accepted that the house is from different periods - Tudor...More

We came upon a sign to the house as we were spending the night locally. Decided to visit the next morning and to come round the drive to see the house is breathtaking. We took the house tour led by Nick and Maggie. It was...More

We loved this gorgeous house and grounds. The shop, the tea room, the bantams running around were all great!

We only visited the gardens and as other visitors have said they are not quite at National Trust standard in that just as with walking around your own garden you can spot things that need doing! That said they are beautiful making really good use...More

The house can be visited at any time of the year, but the gardens are better seen in the spring or summer. There is an Italianate garden that runs down from the side of the house into the vale, but take care as it can...More

Attended a wedding here in the grounds, the back drop of the beautiful house was fabulous and the gardens well worth a stroll round, sunken garden, pools, herbaceous borders and clipped hedges all lovely.

Please note gardens are very nice , but not quite National Trust standard. We are RHS members but were a little disappointed to find house was not open on Friday. It is not mentioned in literature or website. 2015 film "far from the madding crowd"...More
