Mesmerising evening of pure joy

A nice little earner at £10 each, book in advance as its a popular evening out. The tales are told in a purpose built annexe attached to the main house where you you are taken to look at old photos, newspapers, books etc while the rest of the audience arrives. Then it's into the story room - one end of... More

Went along on a very busy night with about 30 people altogether. This meant that the introductory talks had to be done in two lots which meant sitting around for a while. When the folk story telling began it was pretty well done although not by a native Orcadian. Two tales were well told which probably took about 20 minutes... More

We were unsure what to expect, when we booked an evening of traditional Orkney story telling, gathered around the fire at the Stromness Hotel. We shouldn't have worried. This was a truly magical evening - Lynn was a one-woman theatrical troupe, vividly and enchantingly bringing centuries-old Orcadian tales to life. It was, in the truest sense of the word, magical,... I am sure I am not alone with the readymade agenda get the ferry, Old Man of Hoy, Skara Brae, Ring of Brodgar, The Italian Chapel. But then what? Well, this is Orkney the roads are good, traffic is light and getting around by any means is simple. Therefore, take a little time and take a good look around and... More

We thoroughly enjoyed the story telling experience. Lynn re created the manner and style of telling the old tales and legends in front of a peat fire in the Stromness Hotel. Stories that reflect the romance and hardship of the early inhabitants. This is a cultural experience that must not be missed, a link with the past that has just... More

I have just spent a week in the home of the Peatfire tales at Via House Sandwick. I have been doing Tai Chi and Chi Gung with Lynn and walking with John. The Tai Chi is done in the studio where the story telling is held, a magical room full images of myth and legend. Both hosts have a seemingly... More

One of the highlights of our visit to Orkney, so pleased that we spotted an ad for this in the brochure left in our holiday accommodation. OK, so the room that Lynn and John have built onto their house is not an old Orkney croft, but there was a smoky fire and Lynn created an atmosphere that really did make... More

I am so pleased my wife booked the Storytelling session in the upstairs Still Room of the Stromness Hotel, with complimentary drink, a comfortable intimate setting (although I'm sure sitting round a peaty fire would add a different atmosphere, as would the fiddler). Anyway, Lynn's delivery and energy was outstanding, and spellbound, we were transported back beyond the birth of... More

We visited Orkney twice this year and were so pleased we booked Peatfire Tales at Stromness Hotel in July. It was a magical night, with Lynn weaving her tales of Selkies and Fin Folk, taking us back in time to the true oral traditions of the Islands. The next day, John took us on a fantastic walk of Stromness, where... More

I went to one story telling evening last year. The lack of photos on this site is because the couple frown upon anyone wanting to take a photo, even before or after the story telling starts.... Quite a frosty and unfriendly reception and (bizarrely by contrast) they make you engage in folk dancing at the end of the evening. Fairly... More
