An atmospheric ruin overlooking the dark waters of Loch Ness, this dramatic castle has a long and bloody history. Once one of Scotland's mightiest strongholds, Urquhart's strategic location gave it a key role in the Scottish battle for independence. It came under the control of Robert the Bruce before a 150-year power struggle between the Stewart dynasty and the MacDonald Lords of the Isles.

Quite touristy but worth the visit for the history and surroundings. Made for the perfect morning before continuing on our journey.

Having read some reviews that were less than favorable I wasn't sure what to expect but what an amazing view! Definitely watch the short movie in the visitor center before you tour the ruins. The grounds were beautiful and the day was sunny, perfect for photos. We were not disappointed.

The Castle is nice to visit but is way to expensive for what it is. There is an introductory video that you have to watch to be able to understand the castle's history and present state. There are a few free guided tours but they run at odd hours and have large gaps so we couldn't get on one. There... More

The location on Loch Ness is stunning. The history is comprehensive without being overwhelming. The guides were knowledgeable and helpful. A highlight of our trip.

This was on our list of To do while we stayed in Drumnadrochit. There is a really nice visitors center where you watch a short video and also a nice gift shop. My husband to full advantage of the Café that was on site. There were quite a few people there but it didn't hinder the visit at all. It... More

By far my favorite castles of the 10+ I visited on my 15 day trip. Although it has been partially restored, the sense of history just radiates from it. And it's location and the view therefrom are stunning!

A fantastic way to see Loch Ness and explore some fascinating castle ruins at the same time. The pathways are well-maintained, and the informative plaques they posted about the different areas you were standing in helped bring the castle to life.

The ruins of this castle stand on the banks of Loch Ness. The view from the water is amazing. The site is on a steep hill from the Loch shore and there are many steps to the top of the castle. Note - the car park was displaying full notices on a Sunday afternoon in early May.

Little remains of the castle complex, but you can see how big this was in it's time. The stunning part of this site are the views down to the lake. It must have been a beautiful place.
