It’s not difficult to see why the Isle of Lewis consistently receives so much acclaim. From beaches and crystal clear waters that rival luxury tropical islands, to its rich history and stunning scenery, this remote and spectacular destination in the Outer Hebrides is the perfect venue for wonderful memories. Overlooking Stornoway harbour, the impressive gothic-revival style castle was built in the mid 1800’s by Sir James Matheson. Since then this beautiful building has also served as a hospital during WW2, a college, a school and now as an iconic wedding venue and luxurious holiday destination with Natural Retreats. Serving delicious hand-prepared dishes as well as local delicacies, our Storehouse cafe is the perfect place to take a moment after your exploration of the Lews Castle grounds. Enjoy a frothy coffee or two from the comfort of our unique eatery, before tucking into our tasty specials of the day. Pick up the perfect souvenir from your visit to our retail outlet 'The Outfitters', during your time at Lews Castle. From gorgeous gifts to luxury clothing and foodie treats, we've got you covered.

The castle operates as a function and accommodation venue and there are no signs or other information about the rooms open to the public. Museum within castle has excellent videos of people talking about island life and also currently displays 6 of the Lewis Chessmen.

Interesting museum detailing the history & culture of the island. The small castle has been well renovated and is used for functions/weddings. Museum is in the attached annex. Cafe & small gift shop on site with car parking also.

A beautiful renovation- blew us away. The beauty of the castle was matched by the friendliness of the staff. An amazing stay in the Matheson rooms for two grown daughters and our mother.

I stayed in Lews castle recently with my two sons. We had a newly refurbished room which was just stunning. Large and spacious, the rooms feel luxurious and generous from the outset. They are refurbished in a contemporary manner which is sympathetic the old, historical...More

The Museum is fantastic and gives a great insight in to the history of Lewis and it's people. We arrived on a Monday to find it closed - even the staff didn't know why it was shut on a Monday and admitted that hundreds of...More

Hi, You would need to fly into Stornoway Airport and from here you would be able to get a taxi to the Castle. Unfortunately we don't currently offer ground transfers. Thanks

The Castle itself is now open to the public, but the hotel will probably not be open until next year.
