Long walk - and no blue plaque

Quite a long walk or cycle in from the road head (4miles each way) but the house is in a wonderful setting. Nothing to give the game away that Orwell wrote 1984 here --and just a... read more

I absolutely loved my stay in Barnhill and in many ways wish it did not have a Tripadvisor listing. Why? Because it may be somewhere that 99% of holidaymakers may find too different and challenging. This may be why I totally disagree with the average star rating given. There has been one 5 star review and 2 one star reviews... More

Your review is misleading because only two of the four who responded actually stayed in the house. The total score, therefore, should be less than 60% ! (TripAdvisor doesn't permit less than 20%). We booked in for a week but only stayed three nights. We consisted of a large family, and friends, with a shared interest in the history and... More

Barnhill proved to be a great disappointment! We expected it not to have the usual amenities, but was insulted by the level of hygiene and basic provisions. It was cold and damp and the general state of the building was hazardous to health and would not pass safety regulations. None of the beds were made up and the bed linen... More

We stayed for 6 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We came over by boat and were dropped off at the nearest landing point which is 20 minutes walk away from the house. Having to bring all our food and drink we were thankful that Kate the owner had come to meet us in her 4x4 ( for an extra... More

We didn't go in but seeing the very remote setting of Barnhill and learning its history make it fascinating. In Orwells time this must have been like living in isolation as a writer. Beautiful views over the bay from its sheltered position. Continue on for Corryvrecken pool.
