Absolutely beautiful walk, with stunning views. It is quite slippery & very uneven underfoot. I would only recommend going up to the cave of Twm Sion Cati if you have the correct footwear & probably only for older children. Ours are 9,10 & 13 but did struggle a little in places.

I try to make an annual visit in May. Walking around the 2-3 hour path around the reserve, particularly in early morning is a joy - with bluebells, emerging oakleaves, and the superb Spring birds - a good population of Pied flycatchers, Wood warblers, Common redstarts and Nuthatches.
In the past the path has been a little tricky, but great effort has been made to make it easier and more accessible. It still needs a reasonable level of fitness and agility to access it all, but there is a disabled friendly walkway to enable easy access to many features of the reserve.
This place is a tonic for the soul

A very out the way nature reserve near llandovery. The nature reserve is at the bottom of llyn brianne, ystradffin is the nearest village and llandovery is the nearest city. It can be a bit challenging down the lanes if your not used to driving down lanes. The nature reserve doesn’t have a cafe or toilets and desperately needs one. The car park is small, but you can park outside if youre not staying long. From the car park the first bit of the nature reserve is all boardwalk until you get to a T-junction. If you are heading to the Twm sion cati cave take the left route as on the map it suggests that it was the least challenging route, its a bit longer but it is probably easier and if you cannot handle rough parts it would be a challenge. But if you are doing the circular take the right trail or if u are not heading for the cave also take the right route to the river. The cave is about 30 mins at the least because of the rough track i didnt get to the cave but i have heard it is good. A very amazing hidden gem full of wildlife and very scenic walk in the mountainous countryside. Then after that take a drive to llyn brianne.

I visited to see birds, it was difficult to find, sat nav stopped before getting to car park. Car park was having construction work done so had to park on the road. It was a simple circular route, but no mention at the start if the very steep and rocky terrain. I didn't go to the cave for this reason, Rock's were slippery and dangerous when carrying a scope. I enjoyed the few birds I saw, but nothing spectacular at this time of year, possibly better in spring.

We visited here on a lovely hot, sunny day and the scenery is truly beautiful and well worth the effort. Firsty, I need to point out that we took over 2 hours to complete the 3.5km circular walk that was supposed to take about 75mins! This was largely down to me - an over weight, diabetic, asthmatic fifty year old with mobility problems! I managed it but needed the help of my husband and my children to navigate the rocky and steep pathway. Part of the walk is not for the faint hearted, which is why I wouldn't recommend it for very young families, the elderly, the unfit and those with mobility problems. There is a cave half way round the walk but very poorly signed and a climb up from the main path. We were all too tired to try and discover the cave but we did see a couple of teenage boys come back down having enjoyed finding it.
Overall, a great adventure that pushed me to my limit but so glad that it did.

Fabulous walk. Beautiful and rugged.
Definitely recommend but only for very able bodied people. It’s tricky and very slippy in places. Decent walking shoes recommended.
Parking is free but there is a donations box in the car park towards rspb

They say 'it's about the journey, not the destination'....or something like that. Well, that is certainly true about Gwenffrwd-Dinas. Lovely location, ancient woodland, dramatic river crashing over the rocks, well designed and built broad walk and steps...and the least spectacular cave imaginable. In fact, it isn't even a cave, more a small fissure between the rocks. Certainly not suitable for hiding in, unless you a very small, undemanding bat. And, as for being a 'Nature Reserve', we saw 2 robins and 3 small beetles...

Love this reserve, even if no birds it has a great walk, although difficult terrain for part of it, so not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs.

This is an RSPB Reserve, free to enter with donations for parking. The first section is a boardwalk which is ideal for young people and the less able. It will fill a happy half-hour as you walk through trees and end up near the river banks where there is a handy rustic bench to recoup for the walk back. On the way look out for massed bluebells in the right season and for fly-catchers here for their summer break.
The walk continues for the more adventurous and requires suitable foot-ware. It is a walk along rocky paths with frequent ups and downs but it is worth the effort - you follow the river as it forces its way through a rocky gorge, crashing over rocks with much sound and fury. The walk levels out and becomes a very pleasant woodland walk, taking you in a circular path back to the boardwalk. It is spectacular at all times of year but particularly after heavy rain and in the bluebell season.

As a lot of people have said it's not a walk for the infirm. However, we have seen many birds here. Both flycatchers, redstart, tree pipit, wood warbler, marsh tit, nuthatch, peregrine, red kite, dipper plus all the usual common species. You do need to choose your time of the year though.

Is the Gwenffrwd part of the Gwenffrwd-Dinas reserve open to the public, as all the reviews just mention the Dinas part of the reserve?
Written 9 November 2018
Hi. As far as I know the entire reserve is open. However it is so important that visitors are aware of the extreme terrain in parts of this area. It's always safest to stay on the footpaths. The entire valley below the Llynbriane dam is so special and even walking along the country lanes is a delight. At the moment the last remnants of the spectacular autumn colours just survive, so visit now before the winter sets in.
