Great little museum of an old Victorian Gaol. The ladies in reception were lovely and helpful. The museum gives you an insight in to the life of a prison in days gone by.

The route through the museum is set up for Civid - one way and few exhibits seemed to be closed as a result. o weaver, in my personal view I spent a good hour and a half looking round reading all the information on the jails history. I certainly would it have wished to be incarcerated in the jail. It must have been very bleak and he work back breaking.

Definitely a place to visit. You can combine your visit with adding the Court house on and get a little discount. Worth doing it. The court house only take half. And hour to look around but is interesting to see.

One of the best museums and experiences in the Country. Don't miss it, in fact plan a journey around it.

Absolutely amazing! Like many other we came to visit the castle and town, didn't even know about the Gaol and Courthouse! As you walk up the road the sight is amazing, so bold and strong but it gets even better as you go in. Wonderful piece of history and architecture. It is utterly amazing how lovingly it has been restored with loads of information boards. It is probably one of the most interesting places I've visited.
The ladies on reception were extremely polite and helpful, really made us feel welcome, a credit to the museum in fact. We bought the joint ticket with the court house, a must to do as you see both sides of the story.
The "last walk" was amazing, to see just that was incredible.
An absolute must for any visitor. A+++👍👏

A simply brilliant and very informative experience. Plenty of rooms to explore and the actual court was a very thrilling space to walk through.

Top customer service

Very interesting and informative about life in a Victorian prison. I had a 2-month old baby with me and couldn't take the pram around. The ladies on reception said they would watch my pram for me and they even helped me put my baby wrap on. Outstanding customer service.

My third visit to the gaol. It's an incredible, emotive experience. It would be my highest recommendation for visitors to the island. Totally authentic, eerie and very sad. Make sure you visit the courthouse too! Makes you very glad to be living now, rather than then! The punishments were barbaric. A must for ghost hunters and sensitives..

Very interesting and informative, we enjoyed every minute of it!! If you love history, you’ll love it. The staff were warm and friendly, telling us about experiences others had and chatting with us as we left. Great place.

A chilling slice of history
Sep 2021 • Couples
A really friendly welcome and excellent resume by Roger. All staff are in period costumes adding to the chill of entering a gaol.
I was surprised by the amount of the original building still there and a stark reminder fee of what it was like to be a Victorian prisoner.
There is just the right amount of balanced interpretation so you get a feel for each cell rather than read and rush on to the next one.
Well done to Beaumaris Town Council and all the staff on preserving this slice of history and presenting it so well to visitors.

Hidden gem
Sep 2021
I am disabled and the gaol had a number of steep steps. The staff led me through a no entry so as not to climb the many steps. I am really pleased that they did as the first floor was very fascinating and informative. A brilliant insight into the history of the gaol and the inhumane treatment of law breakers in the past. Well worth a visit to this hidden gem.

90mins of interesting history
Sep 2021 • Couples
Very pleasent hour/hour and a half. Very interesting, full of history, small but they fit a lot of story in.
We bought it with the courts visit too, which is a 5mins walk away.. Its only £6.50 for the Gaol and £9 if you include the court.. The court is much smaller and I don't think hugely adds to the experience, I'd say do the Gaol, skip the court.
There is a guy called Roger who plays the role of Governor.. He walks about the place telling stories and giving history, he is the highlight of the tour, very knowledgeable and friendly.
Go as it opens to get him to yourself!
