Puffing Billy is...

Puffing Billy is Australia’s favorite steam train and one of the finest preserved steam railways in the world. This century-old steam train continues to run on its original mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook in the magnificent Dandenong Ranges 40kms east of Melbourne.

Puffing Billy was built to serve at the turn of the century and is a genuine relic of our more leisurely days. The Railway is the major survivor of four experimental lines used to develop rural areas in the early 1900s.

Puffing Billy Railway is now a major tourist attraction and operates every day except Christmas Day, thanks to the tireless efforts of more than 900 dedicated volunteers.

I took train from Melbourne Central railway station to Belgrave and changed to steam train from there. The train was open air and many people were sitting on the window with legs hanging out. I'll suggest sitting on the right side while travelling to Lakeside station, because there were more open fields and valleys on this side. The train is... More

I have visited this narrow gauge railway over the years. I my opinion this is the best of its kind anywhere. Even better than the famous Welsh railways which I have also experienced. It's the ever winding tracks following contours of the Dandenong Ranges that make Puffing Billy stand out. The forest and tree ferns enclosing the tracks are amazing.... More

We booked and had the three course lunch option were you dine in the restaurant carriges. The lunch was nice but i personally found the portions a little small. We had Moroccan Lamb Kebabs,Herbroasted Chicken breast, Field Mushroom Pie and Home Made Tangy Lime Pie & Cream. $197 for two people, which when you take out the price of a... More

Firstly the train left 15 minutes later. It then stopped at Menzies creek and we were there for 20 minutes. We therefore arrived at lakeside at 2.05 when we were scheduled to arrive at 1.30. This meant we only had 25 minutes before the train left again as we couldn't wait until the 3.45 train. So we quickly walked to... More

I drove to Belgrave and used the Mater Christi College car park which is free during school holidays and weekends. I did the whole trip from Belgrave to Gembrook which was $71 return. The PBR receives no government funding so the ticket is covering all of the operational cost. This is the only narrow gauge railway I've been on where... More

You can't go past Puffing Billy as a tourist destination... I have distinct memories of hanging my legs out the windows and waving to everyone, and now my children enjoy the same experience. We had a great day out recently doing the whole journey from Belgrave to Gembrook, it was our first time on the Lakeside to Gembrook leg and... More

What a great place to visit - The Dandenong Region and the beautiful locations that can be seen and accessed from several stations along the historic Puffing Billy Railway. My husband arranged for us to travel in the beautifully restored dining cars on the 12:30 train from Belgrave as part of Puffing Billy's Steam and Cuisine Luncheon which travels between... More

We missed the 11.10am ride at Belgrave and bought the 12.30pm tickets instead. We didn't opt to buy tickets online as we wanted to only take the train to Menzies Creek and that option wasn't available online. We enjoyed using the time to wander around the station and take pictures with the station master and the post master. It's a... More

This narrow gauge steam railroad first opened in 1900. It ran for 29 km until 1953. In that year a landslide blocked the track. That and rising expenses shut down the operation. However, public interested resulted in the line being reopened in 1962 and extended to its current end point in 1998. The vast majority of the "employees" are actually... More

The last time I was on Puffing Billy I was 10yrs old. Thirty yrs on it has not changed at all. We have a 7yr, 3yr and 6 month old. I was a little concerned that they wouldn't enjoy but they loved it. We jumped on at Belgrave, got off at Lakeside for a picnic. Then grabbed the arvo train.... More
