PUFFING BILLY OPERATES DAILY EXCEPT CHRISTMAS DAY. Puffing Billy is Australia’s favorite steam train and one of the finest preserved steam railways in the world. This century-old steam train continues to run on its original mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook in the magnificent Dandenong Ranges 40kms east of Melbourne. Puffing Billy was built to serve at the turn of the century and is a genuine relic of our more leisurely days. The Railway is the major survivor of four experimental lines used to develop rural areas in the early 1900s. Puffing Billy Railway is now a major tourist attraction and operates every day except Christmas Day, thanks to the tireless efforts of more than 900 dedicated volunteers.

Definitely would like to visit again BUT this time, not in winter. It was such a great experience but we went during winter season(not a good idea) so it was unbearable and got off at the next stop. It's for every age and worth it...More

Before the trip, I was worried about the parking arrangement. I was also unsure which is the best station for the trip. So we decide on a round trip between lakeside and gembrook. In this way, we just need to pay a flat rate of...More

The teenagers loved this ride. The view was jaw dropping in parts. Loved how the volunteers dressed up in the clothes from yesteryear, made it feel authentic. The hours stop at the end was well worth the wait for hot chips and parrots that you...More

On a romantic weekend away, I wanted to revisit this steam train from my childhood. The actual engine is a marvel. The scenery & volunteers are amazing. Such a great part of Victorian history.

Unfortunately it rained for our journey on the Puffing Billy but we still enjoyed this 30 minute ride. The seats are quite comfortable and there are blinds to keep out the rain. However, we couldn't hear the on-board commentary - a microphone is really a...More

We travelled with both younger children and teenagers. The scenery was very pleasant, and the trip not too short and not too long. An authentic experience. Not a cheap trip, but considering the cost of running this enterprise, worth every dollar
