PUFFING BILLY OPERATES DAILY EXCEPT CHRISTMAS DAY.

Puffing Billy is Australia’s favorite steam train and one of the finest preserved steam railways in the world. This century-old steam train continues to run on its original mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook in the magnificent Dandenong Ranges 40kms east of Melbourne.

Puffing Billy was built to serve at the turn of the century and is a genuine relic of our more leisurely days. The Railway is the major survivor of four experimental lines used to develop rural areas in the early 1900s.

Puffing Billy Railway is now a major tourist attraction and operates every day except Christmas Day, thanks to the tireless efforts of more than 900 dedicated volunteers.

We went on the Puffing Billy on our own taking the metro rail from CBD to Belgrave Stn. We recommend to set out early and catch the 10:30am train. Arrived early and you may have some time to chat with the engineer who will give you an account of how the steam engine works or the great Volunteers who will... More

Absolutely loved stepping back in time and taking a trip on Puffing Billy. Sitting on the side of the carriage was an amazing experience.

We felt like Royality when we arrived at Puffing billy station . Was met by a gentleman who assisted us and then a chap called Ken who went beyond and above assigned us a carriage for all of us 11 children under 5 and 11 adults. Everyone was shipped back to childhood, being able to sit on the window ledge... More

What a lovely sunny day for our train ride from Belgrave to Emerald lake return, into the beautiful Dandenong ranges. We arrived and enjoyed listening to an elderly gentleman playing an antique music box (hand cranked) on the station platform dressed in period costume. Most people hung their legs outside of the carriages for the trip and took lots of... More

We pre-booked our 11.10 train to Lakeside and packed our picnic lunch, for a trip back into childhood. The atmosphere was happy and carefree and adults and children alike hung out of the train to take in the beautiful scenery. All along the line people came out and waved to the passing train and passengers. Our picnic was shared with... More

Hi, I would suggest you book either the 12.30pm or 1.15pm train. You never know how long it will take to get through the airport and collect your hire car. Best to take the pressure off and not try to make the 11.10am. If you arrive at Belgrave early, you can always wander up into the Belgrave main street (3... More

We traveled North of Melborne to Belgrave, about an hour ride, to the Puffing Billy Railway. It is the home of the oldest active steam engine (circa 1813). It is both an attraction and a commuter train for people who live in small villages near Belgrave. It was an unexpectedly cold morning to be riding in open passenger cars. But.... More

We have no idea what it was like in the general carriages - maybe not too comfortable, but we had booked lunch and that was excellent. The lunch cars were well restored and the lunch (choices prebooked) was excellent and immaculately served - the first 2 courses on the way up and the dessert on the way back. The wine... More

We visited on a Sunday for the 2.30pm train. Ran down the slopes only to discover that the tickets were all booked out (by online and tour groups). So we would advise you to book online first.

This is a beautiful, fun and unique way to enjoy The Dandenongs. The views are spectacular and the destination (Emerald Lake) is a picturesque destination. I recommend Puffy Billy the "children of all ages"
