This monument is a saddening reminder of the senseless events that can take place in times of strife. German immigrants who wished to remain loyal to the Union who welcomed them to the New World were slain by confederate sympathizers during the Civil War.

A little known part of Civil War history. German '48ers and descendants who sided with the Union and were killed in battle with the slaveholders' Confederacy while attempting to join Union forces. The '48ers term refers to the exiles of the defeated democratic revolution of...More

Do not expect to spend the afternoon pursuing this historical marker. While it is pretty cool, it is also just what it says it is and will occupy minutes of your day. Plenty of history to see in the area so not a wasted trip...More

Commemorating the community of German immigrants, unwilling to sacrifice their convictions, who fled the confederacy for Mexico. Tragically almost all were slaughtered only a days ride from the Mexico border. Much information can be found at the Comfort Heritage Foundation.

Worth visiting to learn some of the history of Comfort from the American Civil War time. Local people were loyal to the American Union as the had pledged their allegiance to the Union when the emigrated to Texas in the 1840's.

We were told this but I don't know if it's true. It is true that German men were massacred by southern soldiers as they wanted no part in succession and tried to flee to Mexico. Interesting story and a sad part of our greater history.

The Treue Der Union is the ONLY Monument for the Civil War in the South. Original Comfort families fought and were killedin a short battle. However a very historic battle. Worth taking your time yo see.

This monument tells a tale I had never heard, having been born and raised in Texas. I am a Civil War buff, and was totally ignorant of this historically significant event. Well worth the time to come to Comfort and learn this hidden Civil War...More
