Weekdays are very nice and comfortable, except during any holiday season, then any day is nuts. There are cool shops and nice restaurants and it is worth a visit. - EC13091Ellicott City, Maryland1,248 contributionsJust meanderFor a town of about 15,000, Fredericksburg punches above its weight class. Main Street is home to many good restaurants and stores. The sidewalk is generally covered, meaning that on a hot or rainy day you’re out of the worst of the elements. On our first evening we strolled after the shops were closed and got a flavor of the town. But the next day, when everything was open, it was really hopping. Stores had lots of customers and the wine bars were doing good business. Highway 290 forms Main Street, and there’s a steady stream of traffic including large trucks passing through town. Happily the crosswalks are at every block. The street itself is wide, so when the light turns to “walk”, start immediately. Halfway across you’ll see the clock begin to countdown.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 November 2023

I'm on the fence about this rating because there ARE a lot of cute shops and restaurants, wine and beer tasting rooms and a fantastic Pacific War museum all on Main Street. However, it is a MAJOR highway going through this street with 18 wheeler after 18 wheeler. It is LOUD and not quaint at all. When I say loud, like you can't hear the person walking alongside you when the large trucks and trailers and RVs roll through town. It is also VERY crowded on the weekend. We arrived on a Wed and enjoyed strolling around WED but FRI and SAT it was crazy busy - like we couldn't walk through the stores because the aisles were so crowded. It WAS Oktoberfest weekend so maybe it's not normally that crowded but waiting 1 ½ - 2 hours to eat or too crowded to shop was not enjoyable. We did attend OCKTOBERFEST Friday night and we enjoyed some German beers and German music and some German food. Lots of people dress up for Oktoberfest and that was fun to see. There is also a super pushy storefront selling $300 eye cream that applied some cream to my under eye and it's been burning and swollen ever since despite washing it off within an hour because it was burning so bad. Super super annoying to be attacked by salespeople standing in the doorway offering a test sample of something especially when 30 minutes later your eye is stinging and swollen half shut.

Hundreds of semis come through on Main Street day and night. The noise is crazy bad. They put a noise ordinance in for bars and music. Need to create a bypass for all these trucks!!

Abundance of shops and restaurants to visit. Check out Nimitz Museum for history. The Rockbox has great musical shows in a smaller venue.
Lots of nice people strolling Main Street.

Cute little town with some good restaurants and shops and fun wineries. Be careful, however, of the local police as they took one of our group to jail and made him spend the night for “public intoxication “ (acting silly as we walked home one night). He was tipsy after a day of wine tasting and a couple of hours at the bar and was respectful to the police but they put him in handcuffs-totally unnecessary. Cost him a night of his life and $500. Lots of bachelorette parties that weekend but be aware-Fredericksburg cannot decide whether they want to entertain you or fleece you for having fun.

It has unique shops for all tastes
So much choice to spend hours browsing around the shops
It is extremely quaint Main Street
Cowboy boots are a lot cheaper here than Austin
There are a lot of wine shops to purchase wine or wine tasting
Dotted amongst the shops are lots of places to eat

Are the shops on Main Street open on Sunday? And if so what time do they open?
Susan L

The majority of shops will open by 10AM on Sundays. Some, like my boutique (Que Bella Boutique) open earlier due to breakfast crods at nearby restaurants. Wine tasting rooms will be open by noon. The majority of shops will be closed by 5:30 Sun-Thur and by 6PM Friday & Saturday.

I really don't know. I would call the Baron's Inn. I am sure they would have the information. They are a nice hotel and would know the area practices on Christmas. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Are there any Caricature artists in Fredericksburg?
sharonwW9192XT

I honestly have no idea on this one. There is an incredible fair during their October Fest which is very traditional German and they had many different activities to offer during this full plated multi-event fair. You might also check with one of the two Christmas stores which are open year round and also cater to the unusual, the antique and various displays.
Hope it helps. One things for sure, you'll have a great time looking for your artist.

The Farmers' Market is only on Thursday mornings from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. It is located in the rear parking lot of the Collierville United Methodist Church, just off the town square.

290wineshuttle is a great way to go. It generally starts about 10AM and runs till 5. I believe it goes to 7 or 8 different wineries. You are not limited by the shuttle, simple get off at the winery of your choice, stay as long as you like, then simply step out to the waiting area and catch the next shuttle and go to the next winery.
A great way to spend a day with friends.
