Lovely old palyhouse

An old Spanish Style Playhouse(“corral de comedias) in the beautiful city of Alcalá de Henares, 30km away from Madrid. I recommend it here as a theatre, not as a historical building. The program of plays is very interesting and the building is lovely. Maybe the seats could be a bit more comfortable but it’s definitely worth the visit.

Learn & laugh, worth the guided tour

Super easy to reserve the 3€ tickets online. The website says 25 min tour but it lasted an hour and I was glad -- this lady was on fire! Knowledgeable, sharp and slightly irreverent humor, very considerate of the hard-of-hearing/limited mobility folks in the group. I loved listening to her talk about the 500-year history of where we were sitting and the evolution of theater and its audiences. Definitely worthwhile.

Jewel in the crown of Alcala de Henares

I have been to this theatre loads of times in the 5 years I have lived in Alcala.
Obviously your experience depends on the event you go to but it is a beautiful old theatre with good sightlines and clear acoustics.
I have seen experimental Shakespeare, Avantgarde dance, great flamenco and popular children's events here.
All well presented.

A MUST historical landmark

This place comes as mandatory if you want to understand the history. Bit hidden in Plaza Cervantes but I strongly recommend to visit it. It only costs 3€ and the visit takes 30 minutes.

Unfortunately the Corral is closed until the middle of September! Shame for visitors who arrive in August! Infact there were several places in Alcala that were closed in August - eg the Palacio Laredo. The Monasterio de San Bernado also closed for renovation. Sorry this is not meant to be a huge criticism of Alcala - w loved it Andy there are plenty of other places to see - but if they want tourists to come they must accommodate those who arrive in August as well!!

Visit to understand Spanish medieval theatre

This was a nice surprise and I highly recommend it. The 'corrala' was a backyard shared be a few neighbours, which was used for theatrical performances. In the 16th century it became a hub for social gathering and entertaiment. The tour, which lasts around 45min, takes you the history of this particular 'corrala', the oldest in Spain. My kids really enjoyed the special effects for a stormy weather used back in the days

Almost hidden but on the main square

The only drawback might be if you do not have some Spanish as the tour seemed to only be in Spanish.
