The state park is an unexpected gem - the Sandhills are amazing. Whilst we were there to take photos and admire the landscape, it was lovely to see families camping and enjoying the activities such as tobogganing down the dunes. The staff are very warm...More

Most of the dunes, at least the south 2/3rds of the park, are covered in an ugly dense vegetation. Only 2 areas are reasonably clear and they are pretty spectacular.

We spent several months staying at Monahans Sandhills State Park and we miss it, greatly. We enjoyed the office staff, they are all super friendly. The whole family had a blast sliding down the dunes and going for long walks. We can't wait to visit...More

The wife and I took a try at the sand sledding. Didn't have good luck with getting any speed - it is not like sledding on snow. Just another item checked o the Texas Bucket List. The park ranger suggested that winter time the sand...More

I have always wanted to see these dunes. We arrived around sunset, but the visitor center was closed and really the dunes weren't much. Little kids might enjoy sliding down them, but there is not much for adults to do.

This is a great place to see and experience if you've never seen sand dunes but I highly do not recommend visiting in the summer months. If you do, go at cooler times of the day and take plenty of water! The sand was extremely...More

My husband and I went to Monahans Sandhills State Park on a Saturday morning in July. Many kids and some adults had plastic disks and were sliding down the sand dunes. That was fun the watch. The park office rents plastic disks for about $2.25...More

We arrived at noon (mistake!), rented two disks and after 40 minutes we left! It was too hot! Went back later in the day and had the best experience. Perfect temperature and great light for photographs. Rangers are extremely helpful. We stopped in many places...More

Not sure. Depends on what you plan to do. I would think Fall & Spring would be less HOT. And a half-day may be more than enough to do it all unless camping out.

We were in a fifth wheel but a lady and several children tent camped across from us. The area was well patrolled by Rangers.

Tent camping is very popular at Sandhills. I think it would be great...obviously check wind conditions for anything unusually high.
