Ila Loetscher, the "Turtle Lady of South Padre Island", originally formed our organization to save the Kemp's ridley sea turtle in 1977. Now we are a sea turtle hospital with a mission to rehabilitate and release any injured sea turtles, increase awareness concerning their safety and habitat, and assist with conservation efforts for all sea turtle species. We are funded by donations, grants and gift shop proceeds--

Great experience

The turtles were amazing. The center does incredible things to save injured turtles who otherwise would not have a chance of survival.

They're doing such great work here to rehabilitate and return the sick and injured turtles to the wild.

Very informative. My husband and I love all animals and are so grateful for the people that help them. Great place to take children so they can learn about what beautiful creatures are in the ocean and to be aware of what humans are doing to the environment and what they can do to help. Beautiful sea turtles to see.

This was one of our more interesting points of interest on our trip. We learned a lot about the problems the sea turtles experience. We also got to see the rescued turtles up close. They were very large and colorful. We happened to be there when they showed a brief tape which was very informative. we also were able to... More

This place does an excellent job of informing the visitors about the declining turtle population. Can hardly wait for their new facility. Their goal is to rehabilitate them if possible so they can be returned to the Gulf. If that is not possible then they have a home here.

This tiny gem of a non-profit turtle sanctuary will be the highlight of your South Padre Island vacation. Even if you only have an hour to spend there, your time will be well spent standing within inches of the turtles and learning the difference between sea turtles, and their land cousins. My hat is off to all of the staff... More

I ❤️ turtles!!! This place is free and has amazing stories of how these turtles got to where they are. Some other stores are truly amazing how they even survived but thanks to this facility they did! They do ask for a donation whatever you can afford. Absolutely amazing and I am looking forward to going back again!!!

A small, but important facility operated by volunteers supported by donations. It is an operational rehab operation for sea turtles. A number of turtles are available for viewing and their work is explained by staff. Definitely worth checking out.
