Vaughan is easily one of the most interesting, learned and enthusiastic guides I have ever met. His deep knowledge of the history and lore of the Ancient Puebloans and the landscape they inhabited makes for an unforgettable experience. You will come away mesmerized by the beauty of Cedar Mesa and hungry to learn more about the people who once inhabited... More

Our day trip with Vaughn was to view petroglyphs in the Cedar Mesa area. The setting was beautiful, the petroglyphs were fascinating and Vaughn had an extraordinarily deep knowledge of the archeology/anthropology of the area. Just as rewarding was Vaughn’s eclectic stories of writers, the politics of the area and his background. Great trip. Recommend highly to anyone with an... More

We spent an amazing day on Comb Ridge with Vaughn, hiking through gorgeous territory to ruins and rock art. All along the way learning so much about the past, present, and even a bit about the future. Vaughn has a gift of imparting his deep appreciation and understanding about what we were looking at and walking through. With such insights... More

Just once out with Vaughn Hedenfled, the chief guide and owner Far Out Expeditions and I was hooked. His 6-day backpacking trip into the lower Grand Gulch sold me on his experience, knowledge, skills as a guide and overall nice guy. He kept things exciting all the time. I felt he was in complete control even when rain threatened to... More

I have backpacked extensively in this area for 20 years. I really wanted to do a certain canyon and FOE was running a trip there. Vaughn is the most knowledgable guide I have EVER hiked with--from archeology to land issues to cowboy history. I saw rock art I would have walked right by. He has an extensive wilderness emergency medicine... More

Where to begin . . . I wanted to take my son and his friend on a Spring Break trip to learn about the ancient puebloans, to see a bit of how and where they lived and what they left behind. Our time with Vaughn was absolutely the highlight of the trip. Vaughn is a living and breathing repository of... More

Laura did not fall!! Thanks Vaughn! Everything else was pretty cool too. Except for when he got angry at some people who went on a closed trail and went back to seal off the entrance with branches. If Cairns were Japan, this guy is Godzil. So don't build those. This was an incredible adventure. In all honesty we could not... More

My wife and I utilized Vaughn 5 years ago on a whirlwind Southern Eastern Utah trip. This time we wanted to slow down and really enjoy the immediate area around Bluff. And we planned the whole trip around Vaughn's availability. We weren't disappointed. Vaughn is one of the leading authorities of the area and it's cultural history in the world.... More
