An overview of river running in Utah
Aug 2021
This museum will teach you about the exploration of the Green and Colorado rivers, from John Wesley Powell through the modern day, water issues, and how river running developed on the rivers of Utah and Arizona. It's an essential visit for recreational river runners, and for anyone interested in the natural history of the area's rivers.

deticated & small
Apr 2021
Fully tells the tale of the exploration, settlement & cartography of the region. These mountains were among the last to be accurately mapped out for the continental/ lower 48 states.
The museum is small, so one may make either an afternoon or morning trip here & then travel to some of the sites listed here in person.

Lots of geology, geography, and area history

There’s so much information about explorers, western history, geology and mapmaking here. A must see and worth a trip. It’s more that you will learn in any class.

A great presentation of local history
Nov 2020
Almost every town I visit anywhere has its own museum. They are an incredible way to quickly learn about the town and the local history and culture. This was no exception! The museum was right across the street from the hotel and I had some time to kill. The museum is not that large but gives a comprehensive history of the area. Favorite aspects that I appreciate in these local museums is that they educate about where the names of things in the area come from. Names like Powell take on a new historical significance and the understanding of the geological evolution take on new depth. Including the outside panels it took just over an hour to go through. There is also a nice gift shop that is worth spending a little time in. The fee is nominal just $6.

This is a hidden gem, worth a stop
May 2020
I was here with my wife and our son about 8 years ago, stopping as we drove from Moab back to Salt Lake City. I stayed two nights in Green River last week as part of a hiking trip, and was delighted to see that the John Wesley Powell Museum was open again. It's a small place, and a Smithsonian affiliate, and never very crowded. I enjoyed my visit, which provides a great overview of Powell and his two expeditions to explore the Colorado.

Hidden Gem, a must-visit for water sports enthusiasts
Sep 2019
We stumbled this upon this well designed tribute to the early river runners on the Green and Colorado Rivers. Who knew? it is also a Hall-of-Fame for those pioneering the sport. Did you know the first rubber rafts were made from re-purposed floating bridge tubes surplussed from War 2? It's all there, and more.

Quite a find for a small town. Great museum, gift shop and a movie on the history of maping the Green River and surrounding areas.
