The Green Mountain Railroad is one of five short line railroads that make up the Vermont Rail System. We are a privately owned and operated rail system that runs throughout Vermont and Upstate New York. Our Railroad carries freight to local businesses and brings passengers on scenic tours throughout the Green Mountain State. Our railroad family works together, with three generations of dedicated railroaders, to make your experience nothing but enjoyable. Whether you are coming along for one of our seasonal event trains or chartering our train for your own event, our passenger representatives will work with you to make sure your experience exceeds expectations. Take a ride with us through Vermont's scenic countryside and experience our beautiful Green Mountain State from the rails.

Our passenger trains run seasonally. Please visit our website and view our schedule for dates, times and ticket pricing.

Oh dear, what a disappointment and so not what we thought it would be. We had booked ourselves onto the Fall Foliage Train Ride as part of our tour of New England. I just want to be clear here that this review has nothing to do with the timing of "The Fall". Advertised as "One of the region's best scenic... More

We were very disappointed by this train ride through the backs of buildings, through the brush and with only 3 glimpses of Lake Champlain. The train is nice but not worth travelling on to Shelburne and back. This was probably the most boring tour I've ever experienced. A one and a half hour of looking ou the window at the... More

Excellent selection for Fireworks in Burlington (Great Fireworks display!). Took ride from Shelburne station to Burlington. Avoided parking & driving hassle for July 4th in Burlington. Relax and enjoy short ride with plenty of parking at station. Will be going back for fall leaf peeping train excursion from Chester.

We took the lovely trip from Chester Depot to Ludlow. It had all the elements, scenery, Fall foliage, and a relaxing ride on restored railway coaches harkening back to the days when rail was the only way to get around this part of the world. There was interesting commentary along the way, and they even managed to hook up something... More

You've done your outlet shopping in Manchester, been to some craft fairs, and taken some lovely drives, but what else to do in southern Vermont? The Green Mountain Railroad offers some short, relaxing trips in vintage rail cars that can be a perfect way to enjoy the fall foliage on a sunny day. The trip from the old station at... More

This train was what it was, a nice ride on the former Rutland between Bellows Falls and Chester Vermont. I can see how other people who aren't die hard railfans would get bored but I sure didn't, for me it was a nice way to spend an afternoon.

The Green Mountain RR offers a taste of what it was like to ride the old Rutland RR between Bellows Falls and Chester-Ludlow-Rutland. The other aspect of the operation of White River Junction to Thetford has perhaps less appeal as it runs along a somewhat rickety and slow former Boston & Maine line that connected with the Canadian Pacific further... The Bellows Falls to Rutland on Oct. 12, 2013 was mediocre. The foliage was past peak, the train left late, and the average speed was only 13 miles per hour. There was not enough time in Rutland to enjoy a nice lunch or browse the farmer's market.

Saw the ad for this in the Vermont tourism magazine and bought ticket online. Fairly disappointed in the trip. It wasn't all that scenic and the views were poor to average. The stop at Cedar Circle Farm was boring. Would have rather spent our time in Woodstock as it looked like a great little village.
