... to a splendid Italianate structure complementing your visit to the Fairbanks Museum in Richardsonian Romanesque. Both super important statements in late 19th century architecture. Now step inside to a public collection wonderfully displayed in contrast to the private bug and animal collection in handcrafted display cases at the Fairbanks. And the painting ...

Wife & I and friends visited this amazing place on our last Fall's tour of New England. This historic Library was built by a former governor of Vermont, who was also an art lover. In addition to books, this wonderful place has quite a collection of paintings, including the largest painting I have ever seen (see pic). I am also... More

The Athenaeum is a step back in time to the Victorian era, complete with squeaky floors. It is quiet and cozy and filled with curiosities. Definitely check it out if you like painters such as Bierstadt and architectural features like spiral staircases. If you want to know more about what you see, borrow a guide book. Admission is free to... More

We did a day trip to the Athenaeum and thoroughly enjoyed this unique library/art gallery. it's quite an impressive Victorian building with lots of ornate woodwork, spiral staircases, and a small but interesting art gallery of about 100 paintings. Nearly all the artwork is 19th century landscapes and portraits - no avant garde or even impressionist works. However, the gallery... More

Staying with family nearby, and had a very nice visit. The large painting by Bierstadt is not to be missed! Quiet, and a bit creaky.

Comfy like the great grandparents' house you never had. Read a book in an overstuffed leather chair, or use the computers for more modern ways of obtaining information. Enjoy the stillness and beauty of the art gallery.

I can get overload in museums so I tend to pick a couple of things to look at rather than trying to see everything. The Athenaeum is the town library with a small free art gallery. Locals, including the Fairbanks family, brought stuff home from European visits and donated them There were some commissions from American artists. Some of the... More

St. Johnsbury is not a particularly attractive vacation destination but if you happen to be in the neighborhood and appreciate history, architecture and art, especially of the Victorian era, then the lovely boulevard that is Main Street is well-worth exploring, especially its book-ends of the public library (the Atheneum) at one end and the Fairbanks Museum at the other. Main... More

What a beautiful library! The architecture is great, which balconies of books and spiral staircases; and the highlight is the artwork you see in the back room. Make sure to borrow a copy of the guidebook at the front desk.

We saw the wee maintain building and it was open. A library, beautyfull one. The natural light comes in by numerous windows and the Domes of Yosemite is something to see with the day light . You have older books as new edited ones. A place to sit and read in the calm, to enjoy the news paper or a... More
