If you visited and liked First Bull Run, you will probably like this place. I was allowed unescorted access into the Bushong house, which dates back to 1825. There are also numerous outbuildings to see. Make sure you go through the tunnel and cross under I-81. It was in the ravine, just east of the interstate, that the 62nd VA... More

For a truly moving experience, try to visit this historic site during on of the Civil War re-enactments. If you can't attend one, plan to visit in the early morning or late evening when you can be there alone. Contemplate how Americans, young and old must have felt as they fired upon one another. This is hallowed ground.

We passed one museum on the way to the Hall of valor -phone number 540-740-3101. I'm not sure if this is the same place. 45 minute film tells the story of the Virginian Military Institute cadets who fought in the new Market battle. Some cadets were only 15 years old others were 17 to 18. They did an admirable job... More

This is an easily toured battlefield for all ages. You can easily walk the confederate line of advance here and the story is not too complex. The 'rats' will be running this line shortly. When you go out to Route 11 and head north, on the west side of the road are several historical markers that you can pull over... More

New Market has a great story to tell. The museum tells not only this story but of the war as a whole. The battlefield is easy to navigate and offers plenty of information. The day we went it was hot so it wasn't the best day to go walking through the field following the signs of engagement. Other than that... More

My son and I visited the battlefield and the Bushong House on a hot summer day. It's a good site for anyone interested in the era of the American Civil War. However, my son stepped up to the porch, stopped short, and said, "I'm not going in there." I laughed and went on in, and in a few minutes I... More

This battlefield has a great story to it so a exploration would be in order. Some of the structures are being renovated at this time because of the use of lead paint. Best to keep a open mind and keep the story of the lost shoes in mind when you take a look at the battlefield.

We were disappointed that we could not enter any of the buildings- there are being renovated due to lead paint - you can't even get close enough to look in the Windows- disappointing. Buildings are in great shape and it's a nice farm.

This is a very small battlefield for an important battle. We didn't see a lot of the battlefield since I have limited mobility. We did get to the farmhouse and out buildings. They has informative plaques. I'm glad we went but it wouldn't be a place we would go again unless there was a reenactment going on.
