Just the road on the way up worth the trip. We went all around from Sea to Torre (1993m) to Manteigas and back to Seia with a stop on top and a swim at the biggest dam.

If you plan to hike at Serra da Estrela it is better to get accomondation at Mandegas. All marked paths are around Mandegas or they start from there. At the village there is Turist information Office where you can get advice and a map of...More

This is a place to take your time and enjoy. These are the highest mountains in Portugal and a really lovely national park with incredible views and an amazing hydro dam at the top.

We visited 18-20 May 2018 and it was perfect. The Torre still had snow on it and the roads were quiet. The summit is reachable by car, with ample free parking. The views both going up and coming down are amazing, with lots of places...More

Really lovely area of Portugal. Well worth a stop and hunting for some smaller sights. Lovely, local food. Great views. Nice people. Top tip, get a car.

It was not the first time I went to Serra da Estrela (the highest point of mainland Portugal, 1993 meters above sea level). Far from it, I’ve been there many times but... never, ever, with the amount of snow like this year (almost at the...More

There is not enough snow for skiing. There were a few snow patches yesterday overrun with kids. However the views from Manteigas to the Tower are beautiful. Nonetheless, 1 day could be done to visit, but would require you to... More

Sorry I don't know about Public Transport as I was on an organised bus tour but I do know that there are walking trails throughout the National Park and the summit can be reached on foot by road and cable car.

Hi, I read your very nice review of the Serra da Estrela Park. My friends and I are going to Portugal for two weeks in mid-September. I make all the arrangements and choose the places and activities as my friend and I have similar interests and they trust me with the choices. After reading the Lonely Planet guidebook and TripAdvisor reviews, I have decided to spend 6 nights in Manteigas because of its central location to the entire area. We like to explore the local villages and do lots of hiking. My question - does this area worth the 6 days? Also, we are visiting friends in Nazare and spending 4 days exploring the coast. After the Serra Park we are driving back to Lisbon for 3 days. I can change the schedule if I find something worth while. Portugal isn an amazingly beautiful country. Please advise. Thank you, Elena
