Founded in 1976, the first museum to honor 4th President James Madison. The Museum houses a wealth of artifacts in its nearly 13,000 square feet of exhibit space that bring to life the rich history of Orange, Virginia. A nice assortment of Madison's belongings along with a large and diverse collection ranging from art and textiles to farm tools and a 1923 Model T. We even have a 1732 Patent House. Only 4 miles from our friends at James Madison's Montpelier, located in the historic town of Orange. Handicap friendly and plenty of parking around the building.

A good place to start before Montpellier visit. A small, low tech museum that was nice. Nice collection of artifacts and good historical timeline of James Madison.

This is a small but impressive museum located right next door to a historic church where Robert E. Lee worshipped in 1863. Many artifacts associated with presidential figures, as well as local exhibits of historic importance are to be seen. The vast majority of these historic treasures have come from the local residents. The staff is friendly and well-informed, and... More

Well I went on Election Day and I didn't pay an admission fee; however, there is a donation box there. Although the website does state there is a fee, non was imposed when I went. The museum has lots of different artifacts on 2 levels. You can actually handle some of the artifacts, just make sure your kids are not... More

Thank you for your kind review. We are delighted that you enjoyed your visit and hope that you tell your friends about the many treasures here. It is usually a surprise to visitors to learn how large the museum is with such a modest exterior. Thank you for pointing out that we do charge admission ($5.50 adults, $2.50 youth ages... More

This museum, located in Orange, VA, is a great place to find many small surprises. Faithfully maintained, this museum is an exciting and educational place, especially if you are looking to supplement your Montpelier/James Madison period experience. It's a shame that the museum is not better recognized for the wonderful repository that it is. This is a large building that extends well beyond it's street appearance. There are objects here that could easily be displayed in the Smithsonian. It is clean, well organized and has the added asset of a director who loves her position and the... More

I would never have gone to this museum if I hadn't been on a group outing, but I really enjoyed it and have recommended it to others since. There is, of course, a lot about James Madison's life and accomplishments, all related by pleasant and knowledgeable docents. But my favorite part was the lower level, which dealt with the county... Very enjoyable stop in Orange. The docent was very informative and friendly. You can spend as little as an hour or longer if you want.

Excellent two-story, several room museum dedicated to James Madison. Well worth the five dollar admission and an additional contribution. Contains some Madison-owned artifacts and a bed that belonged to Madison's cousin Zachary Taylor. The woman who runs the museum is very knowledgeable and willing to share information about the Madisons. We toured Montpelier the next day; when in Orange, go... More

We missed this museum when going to montpelier because it is in town, and just off the highway; glad we read about it in trip advisor. Although this is a smaller museum, it contains a wealth of information about James Madison and the civil war era. The museum provides an excellent personal tour through the museum to explain briefly the... More

Only $5 to see so much historical memorabilia. This is a deal! They start you out by giving you a very short tour to help you get your bearings in the museum and at that time they also point out pieces of interest. After that you can roam at your own will and read all the details on each piece.... More
