We set out of Opua and rode to Kaikohe on our first day. If we did it again we would ride from Kaikohe to Opua as we found the ride a bit of a grind. It is a long leg with way too many bike gates at which you have to dismount. It has a very long uphill section that... More

We did the trail over 2 days: Opua-Kaikohe then Kaikohe-Horeke. Opua-Kaikohe was a grind. After Kawakawa there isn't much to see, and there are far too many gates where you need to dismount. Fortunately, Kaikohe-Horeke is magnificent. The highlight for us was an idyllic section meandering through farmland next to a stream. The quality of the track is excellent and... More

I cycled the trail over two days travelling east from Horeke to Opua, enjoying the uphill section and views between Horeke and Okaihau especially. It's worth making two or three days of it. Stay overnight on scenic Hokianga Harbour, revitalise a cycle-weary bod at thermal Ngawha Springs. I hired a great bike from Top Trails. Operator, Ray Clarke, was helpful... More

The only downsides I could think of are the motorcycle prevention barriers. Difficult to wheel a fully loaded pannier-bag bicycle through. In the wet your bike will get dirty but the views are nice and there's no cars to worry aout.

Completed the twin coast cycle trail over two days in February. At the time none of the websites were providing up-to-date information and the Norhtland Council was awol when trying to determine if ong bridge near KawaKawa was open or under repair. Check before going. We set off from Opua in glorious weather around 1pm. The amble along the estuary... More

Did This from Opua to Horeke. I would recommend this way as there is very little uphill and you get a great downhill from Okaihau to Horeke which is also the most scenic part of the track.Stopped at Kawakawa for morning tea. Can recommend 39 Gillies St Cafe which is across the pedestrian crossing from the hundertwasser toilets. From here to... More

Completed this from Horeke to Kawakawa in one day (80km) on my MTB, unfortunately the heat got me by 2pm so didn't get to opua settling instead for drinks at Kawakawa. I loved the section from Horeke to Okaihu in spite of the stiff switch back climb 1.6km up to the plains. Don't let this deter you but set off... More

Biked from the Mission House at Horeke to Opua on Waitangi Day. The best part of the ride for me was from the Mission House to the start of the climb to Okaihau, beautiful estuary, countryside, trees and river, but, in 30 deg C the 1.6 km climb was a killer! (Nb water tap across road from picnic area by... More

We went as two couples and rode from Horeke to Kaikohe (approx 40km). The track is yet to be officially opened - ceremony to be held in March 2017 - but it is in great condition. As there is not currently a pick up service, one of our group did the return visit to collect the car however he enjoyed... More

Most enjoyable . It is down hill Okaihau to Horeke would be more of a challenge the other way. Some great points of interest along the way . A great way to see a part of Northland ,as always, full of surprises.
