My uncle worked in this mine in the 1930s.

I visited the mine, but never went into it. I talked to local council member, and she became interested in learning more about him, and where he was buried. But she couldn't... read more

I visited the mine, but never went into it. I talked to local council member, and she became interested in learning more about him, and where he was buried. But she couldn't find the burial site after conducting searches for days. I obtained his death certificate, and found that he was killed by a coal car which was let go... More

Good easy stroll in a mine. Roomy enough and we'll lit. See relics and learn how things got done 4.5 stars. The navigator might take you on some interesting shortcuts. Don't go on empty tank.

This mine closed in 1954, but our tour guide worked in a mine nearby in the 70s and 80s. He was very informative. It is always cool and damp in here (50 or so). Tour takes about an hour, so bring a jacket. Also, water drips from the ceiling frequently. Parking is close and free. Make sure to look at... More

Drove up from NC to visit this exhibition mine in the small, former coal mining town of Pocahontas, Virginia. Our guide, Mr. Miller, was a retired miner and was quite knowledgeable about the history of the mine and how the "black diamonds" were extracted from hundreds of feet under the ground. The mine tour takes about 45-60 minutes, and bear... More

Experienced miner took us through what use to be a working mine, explaining how the coal was extracted. We were allowed to look at actual equipment used to extract the coal as he recounted incidents that actually happened within the coal mines. Many artifacts were on display to view as we asked questions. Well worth the 1.5 hour drive to... More

We couldn't go down the entire mine because of flooding, but they reduced the cost to $5 and it was still worth my time. The reviewers are right - the old miner tour guide did retire and we had a young girl. She did a good job, though and had obviously memorized what she had been told about the mine... More

The tour is neat and interesting to see the exhibition mine, however the area look to be in disarray. The museum and area around the mine really showed it's age and lack of upkeep and maintenance. Restrooms had no paper or towels and water was all over the floors. The tour guides were very nice, but not very knowledgeable on... More

We spend lots of time in this area riding the ATV trails and really enjoyed this break in the riding to see a bit of what it was like in the mines.

I toured the mine as a pre-teen with my family along with other families from our Church. The mine made me understand the hard work involved in the coal industry. I admire all those who have devoted their working lives to this work. The town(s) of Bluefield VA & WV were pleasantly scenic. Nice, friendly area.

There were many coal miners in my ancestry and I have heard many stories over the years so I am thankful to be able to take my grandchildren to this coal mine and go inside where we can get a feel of what mining was and is like. The ride into the mine is informative. The guides are full of... More
