Overview
More
Mill Mountain Zoo was founded in 1952 as a nursery-rhyme themed petting zoo that featured farm animals, birds, and native Virginia wildlife. For the first twenty-five years, we were operated by Roanoke's Parks and Recreation Department. In 1978, the Roanoke Jaycees renewed the zoo and replaced old exhibits to create a place appealing to all ages. Governance was turned over to the Blue Ridge Zoological Society of Virginia, Inc. in 1988 (more commonly known as Mill Mountain Zoo). In the early 1990's, a citizens' committee created a master plan for exhibitions, visitor amenities, and expansion of the site to our current eight acres. Other improvements included new exhibits and an upgrade of infrastructure. Mill Mountain Zoo (MMZoo) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to promoting an appreciation and understanding of animal and habitat preservation through the use of quality exhibits, educational programs, and partnerships with other conservation programs. Mill Mountain Zoo is currently home to more than 183 animals, representing 70 species from around the world. Through our admissions and donations, we support local and global conservation efforts. The Zoo is also restoring habitat on-grounds to benefit declining pollinator species and participates in a national monitoring program for amphibians -- Frogwatch. Keeper Chats The zoo keepers love sharing information about their animals. Kids (of all ages) love watching them interact with their charges and learning more about the special relationships they share and how the animals are cared for. Plan to spend some time watching the animals during their feeding times. The schedule changes daily, so check with Guest Services when arriving or call in the morning to find out what will be happening during your visit. Zoo Choo Rides The Zoo Choo is a miniature model G-16 train that operates seasonally at the Mill Mountain Zoo.The train leaves from the station every 30 minutes and follows a 16-inch wide track around the Zoo. The train makes two laps around a track that is more than 1000 feet long. You'll see different views of Mill Mountain Zoo and its animals!

For $32 for a family of 4 I expected to be there for more than 20 minutes. Not much to see, about 10 animals. Sad looking place with extreme prices. We usually look for the smaller zoos but this was just a waste.

We were so very disappointed with this outing. Many reviews indicated to plan for about 2 hours to tour the grounds. We were finished in 45 mins. Most of the exhibits were very small, difficult to see the animals and quite a few where the...More

If you are used to visiting larger, fancier zoos, you will be disappointed. Animal enclosures were very basic and small-ish. They do have some interesting species - a couple I had never seen before. The glass makes it hard to see a lot of the...More

A really nice zoo to spend about 2 hours of your day. Staff is very nice and willing to chat. Highlights include the red panda the snow leopard for me since I've never seen them before. It is a smaller zoo but it's cute and...More

Our family visited the zoo today on a day trip from town and were pleasantly surprised by the kindness the employees showed us. Very sweet and helpful. There weren't many animals but somehow the park still felt cozy and entertaining. Very nice side trip.

All 4 of my grandchildren loved visiting this quaint zoo while they were visiting. The little railroad ride was a highlight, but seeing all of the animals up close was a thrill for them. Highly recommended trip!

This is a small zoo, but it has some wonderful animals. The Red Pandas, the Pallas Cats, Snow Leopards, a nice assortment of birds (including cranes), Lynx, and more. I took a couple of hours - you probably won't need much more than that, I...More

Disappointed in the small cage the Snow Leopard was in. The majestic animal was crying and biting on the fence that surrounded him. Very depressing as I watched the animal pace. The fox looked sick and again the cage was so small. No plans to...More

I love the zoo, too, but it is small and does not have lots of animals. When the train is running, it is fun to take children for a ride around the zoo. The zoo is open year round, but there is more to see...More

Hi, thank you for asking. The USDA prohibits dogs and other pets in zoo's. The only exception to this rule of course are service dogs (not therapy dogs). It helps if you call in advance if you will need to bring a... More
