We visited Fort Boykin because that is where my husband's great great grandfather went to enlist in the 9th Virginia Infantry during the Civil War. There was very little of the actual fort still visible, but there were signs posted giving descriptions of where we were in the fort area. You could also see the ghost fleet out in the... More

We were looking for a place to let the kids stretch their legs before a family event. This place was set at the end of a road with nice parking. As you wander through ancient towering trees and see what is left of the fort now overtaken by nature there are also nicely set up areas to sit and enjoy... More

You can get in a nice hike part of which which will take you along the beach. If you want more, come out of the park and turn right on the road. There is very little traffic and you will wind up hiking along the water again.

I didn't know what to expect. We had a very nice visit. Quiet beach area. My wife and walked the grounds. Seems popular with the locals.

Combined with Fort Huger, these "forts" were important James river defense positions for centuries. Of the two, Fort Huger has more to see with reproduction canons and walkways above the river. However, Fort Boykins is largely untouched and a nice quiet park-like setting.

A local favorite for photographers and beach fans alike. This is a Civil War fort and has markers and information on such. The best part of this location however, is the beach. This James River spot is a perfect setting for a photo shoot or laying on the beach. Not very crowded during the week.

We envisioned visiting a typical fort with stone walls, cannons, etc., but that is not what we found. Fort Boykin was an earthen fort that was abandoned almost 200 years ago so there is nothing much left to see. This is really a park and not a fort. There are walking trails with a nice overlook view of the river... More

I was very excited to see this piece of history, but found a picnic table, a dirt drive and a garbage can instead. I tried walking back through the woods to get to the site, but found a dry open field and a closed to the public sign. Perhaps there is more to behold, but I made the drive to... More

I stopped as an impromptu visit after driving home one day. After a beautiful wak to the river my daughters amazed me by telling me the history of the park and all about the Ghost ships they had learned about in school. It was like the history they had learned all came alive at that moment and the excitement in... More
