The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

We were walking back to our hotel when we happened upon “pay as you will” night at the opening performance of Emma. This great group of young people did a masterful job of portraying their respective characters in the show. We were in Staunton for...More

“The play’s the thing,” wrote Shakespeare, and while the play itself may still be what’s most important, the right venue can definitely enhance the performance. This is especially true when seeing one of the Bard’s works performed at the American Shakespeare Center [ASC] in Staunton,...More

We saw The Taming of the Shrew and it was amazing. The actors used facial expressions and movements that brought the humor to a level of today. It assisted with understanding what was going on in the play. They worked with the audience and made...More

As a frequent audience member at the American Shakespeare Center, I can say without reservation that it is the best cultural experience in the Shenandoah Valley! My wife and I along with my 14-year-old daughter recently attended the "Taming of the Shrew" and "Sense and...More

The venue was very nice. The seats are horrible and kill your back after several minutes of sitting. The actors are very hard to understand and aren’t what I expected. We were all told that no photos could be taken of the actors. During intermission,...More

We come to Staunton once a year to see two Shakespeare plays. This time they were Taming of the Shrew and Macbeth. Quite a match!! Lots of new cast faces this year, but all excellent as always. A real treat!!

Attended performance of Sense and Sensibility and had wonderful time. Small intimate theater. Actresses and actors were top notch. Highly recommend.

We went in December for one of their Christmas specials and loved the place. It has a small, intimate atmosphere. Since it is a Shakespeared theater I expected interaction with the audience and I was disappointed. We loved it so much that we got each...More

This is a great, hidden gem - a wonderful little theatre experience with superb acting, service and overall experience. It is well worth the road trip to experience this authentic and excellent theatre production. Absolutely FIRST CLASS!!

Yes the seats in front of the stage do have individual backs. In addition one can find a limited number of sleeve cushions to fit over the backs to make them even more comfortable. Ask the ushers where they are
