The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

If you live in driving distance, get in a car and go to Staunton, Virginia and see a play (or two or three) at the American Shakespeare Center. We just saw Taming of the Shrew and it was hilarious! The actors use physical comedy to...More

This theater is beautiful and unique; just being in the space is a special experience and then the performances and acting are superb. I have only seen traditional Shakespeare performed here, but am excited to sample the full schedule. The actors are funny, and tragic...More

Our first visit to the ASC was to see Hamlet -- and we were not disappointed! Yes, almost everyone died, but it had lots of humor too! We're going to return soon to see Macbeth.

I will qualify this review by stating that I am far from expert on the works of Shakespeare or acting. I attended as an enthusiastic amateur and loved every minute. Great setting, wonderful acting, the first half took a little to get into but once...More

This theater is terrific. Deeply uncomfortable seating, unconventional repertoire, pleasure in watching inexperienced actors trying to get their chops in tune, BUT. BUT BUT BUT!! What is this theater trying to teach its actors? That all Shakespeare is performed as if it were all farce?...More

Didn't know this place existed until seeing a sign for it while driving up the Shenandoah Valley. Saw a play coming up we wanted to see, Hamlet, and got tickets online. The beautiful Tudor interior feels like the re-created Globe Theatre in London, only inside...More

While visiting Charlottesville, we saw that the Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton wasn't too far a drive, so we ordered tickets ahead for a Saturday evening play. After reading about the playhouse, we decided to arrive early to take the 11:00 tour of the theater &...More

The theater isn’t that big. It only has one stage, and the rest is tickets, snacks, and eating areas. You might be able to have a tour, but I don’t know. And yes, there is a schedule for 2018. It is available at the website... More

Yes the seats in front of the stage do have individual backs. In addition one can find a limited number of sleeve cushions to fit over the backs to make them even more comfortable. Ask the ushers where they are
