We visited the Dismal Swamp on both the VA and NC sides. Visiting the VA side, we drove out to Lake Drummond. It was truly dismal. There are several other entrances, I wish we'd tried another area to explore.

Visited the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge on election day 2016 (somehow seemed appropriate), a beautiful fall day. It is a bit out of the way and being a wildlife refuge, mostly undeveloped. But a pleasant drive to Lake Drummond, stopping for a couple...More

The Great Dismal Swamp is clumsily divided between a National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia and a State Park in North Carolina. As too often, both sides ignores each others existence so trails and facilities don't work together. This is stupid. This review is about the...More

We anted to drive through. We couldn't even get out of the car to get the leaflet you're supposed to get! Enormous insects were actually attacking the car. We were lucky enough to see a turtle in the drive out. Dismal is very appropriate indeed.

You can go experience the Great Dismal Swamp by car or boat (from Kayak to larger trawler). It is an awesome experience - absolutely gorgeous. Be sure to stop at the Visitor's Center for lots of great info. If you go in the summer be...More

The lake is beautiful- we did the car loop- saw marshes, turtles, a snake, and herons. We got out of the car to see the pavilion for the Underground Railroad. After that, we stayed in the car. It was too buggy to spend any time...More

Wow! Probably my fault for visiting in June and also when it had rained recently - but a friend from Texas was visiting and I wanted to take her for a local hike and had heard the hike to Lake Drummond was lovely. We decided...More

We did a quick drive back to Lake Drummond on our way to the beach this year... I wish we had had more time to do some of the hikes. We saw lots of turtles (and herons and snakes) on our drive through the swamp,...More

My second trip here and I am still in awe of the ecological system preserved. Absolutely beautiful place and have seen a lot of wildlife on both trips. Go take the drive thru tour at least. It is about 12 miles round trip and takes...More

I see a lot of great photos of large trees inside the lake. Can these be seen/photographed from the main trails (the boardwalk or the Washington Ditch) or do you really need a boat to get to these spots? If so, could someone recommend either the boardwalk or Washington Ditch as a good spot for "lake tree" photography? Thank you!
