Security at this active military fort is top-notch and we appreciated knowing that even though we were delayed we were safe. We were told the lighthouse was closed due to the excessive heat but for a reduced fee of $5 we could go to the base and go inside. It was quite a short walk from the pay station to... More

We did a day trip to Fort Story during our Williamsburg vacation. We wanted a descent beach stop, plus I considered staying here in the future. The beach is right next to the Cape Henry Memorial (also worth a stop) and across the street from the lighthouse. The beach itself has big boulders (I'm guessing for erosion sake), but otherwise... This was a pleasant day out to discover a bit of American History and to see the views of Chesapeake Bay. Prepare to go through security for a few minutes because this lighthouse is located on a military facility. Also, be aware that you cannot just drive anywhere you like on the base. There are designated areas where only base... More

Historic lighthouses are on an active military base at the north end of VA Beach. Security requested driver's license (not passengers), auto registration and proof of insurance. All riders need to get out of vehicle while car is checked. Fee is $8 to climb the old lighthouse (1791). Both can be viewed across the street from either walkway to military... More

Visit the lighthouse but also beach at Fort Story is a very unique place to visit. If you walk from south(parking on 89th st.) to North you will find 1.5 miles of deserted beach and you will transition from the Atlantic to the mouth of the Chesapeake bay. Always plenty of ship traffic coming out of the bay, and today... More

We came here to visit the lighthouses on the premises. It was a great time touring the lighthouse and learning some history. Also the view from the overlook of the beach and ocean are amazing

We entered Ft Story Navy/Army base having to exit the vehicle for a check and show our identification. There was a lighthouse that is not accessible but we did tour the Cape Henry Lighthouse (see review) then drove on to the Cape Henry Memorial Cross and the Memorial to the Battle of the Capes 1781. There was a gorgeous path... More

What an unexpected pleasure. I read in a traveler guide about the Fort Story Lighthouse. Construction was supervised by Alexander Hamilton. Be sure to climb to the top as the view was spectacular. We also enjoyed visiting First Landing. One note: cars are searched when entering Fort Story, a military post.
