After reading about and hearing about Samuel Hill, I included Maryhill Art Museum in my itinerary. What a pleasant surprise! This impressive building is the jewel of the 5,300 acres situated along the Columbia River Gorge. There are four floors of displays including Native American baskets, clothing, tools, etc., furniture designed by the Queen of Romania, original Rodin art pieces,... More

I happened on to this museum by accident. It sits above the Columbia Gorge and is a beautiful house . Sam Hill was a mover and shaker in this area. The museum has several small Rodin sculptures, several things that belonged to Queen Marie of Romania, a collection of chess sets, Native American baskets, etc. A joy to visit.

Set above the Columbia River with an expansive gorgeous view. Here many stories come together including: The building of Maryhill - just upriver from the former Celilo Falls, why Loie, a European butterfly dancer and artist helped bring Rodin and more than 80 of his sculptures to Maryhill as well as artifacts from Queen Marie of Romania (who visited and... We've been here before they added the ultra-modern building that is attached to the original museum. People were warm and welcoming then. Not so much now. This location is on the way to nowhere - definitely a destination location. People are highly unlikely to come to Maryhill just to use the bathroom. However, when we arrived, after a two hour... I was hoping that not all of the building was an art gallery. It would have been wonderful to see parts of the building restored back to its original use. The garage is one area that I feel would be fantastic to see in operation. the building is a wonderful building, but really would have liked to see some historical... More

I have visited this museum several times and have never been disappointed. There are interesting permanent exhibits and some galleries have rotating exhibits. These have been exceptionally fine exhibits plus the site is beautiful, overlook the Columbia River. There is also a very nice, small, gift shop. It you are ANYWHERE nearby it is very much worth a stop.

I did not expect such a fine and varied collection outside a metropolitan area. A beautiful setting above the Columbia River.

Take a moment to savor a special place - the Maryhill Museum. The story of the mansion is as fascinating as its eclectic collections. The French "couture dolls' will delight both history and fashion buffs

Had hoped to get out to see this museum and had read about it extensively but nothing prepared me for the exquisite setting, curation, novelty and surprise. The eye delights at every turn with story telling as much as education and unique pieces. Be sure and go to the chess set exhibit downstairs. We went two days in a row... More

The Maryhill museum collections are primarily made up of the personal collections and donations of a few people. The main collection is the furniture and other items of Queen Marie of Romania. It is an interesting story on how she became connected to the museums builder. There is an extensive collection of native american pottery, baskets and clothing. The labels... More
