Time traveling

Was honored to take part in a Pig War Celebration between the US, England and Hudson Bay Company. What an amazing, pretty much unknown historical place and time.

The Pig War - what was it all about? After visiting the American and English camps on this pretty little island, you'll know a lot more about this obscure incident in Pacific Northwest history. If you avail yourselves of some the the trails, you'll also get some exercise and get some nice views of a pretty lush environment and the... More

We visited both the American and English camps. This review focuses on the American camp. We had an absolutely magical experience at the American Camp. We hiked into the park along American Camp Trail. We also did a three-mile loop in the park, including trails down to the beaches. This was one of our best experiences on San Juan Island.... More

A very interesting National Historical Park and it is worth the stop. Short video is very interesting and the park rangers very friendly and informative.

This is a beautiful park and should be on any "must do" list when going to the San Juan's. They have a nice interpretive center with a helpful and knowledgable staff.

We have visited this spot a couple of times, and did so yesterday again with overseas visitors. Even though most of the original buildings are gone, two small structures stand there, nicely framing the huge American flag. With the interesting explanatory signs at different locations, it is easy to imagine the camp being there in its entirety, as the entire... More

After we arrived on the morning ferry we went to the American Camp of San Juan Island and enjoyed the views along the roadway - stopping at 4th of July Beach and then to American Camp for a tour of the area. The area was marked pretty well to support self tours - the roadway was under construction so we... More

We made a short stop at American Camp of the San Juan Islands National Historic Park, in our quest to fill our National Park passport books with as many stamps as possible. We didn't need our Annual Park Pass, because entry to this park is free. This is a small park in comparison to most National Parks we've visited. We... More

Fascinating historical parks on each end of the coast. The American Camp area is very desolate and beautiful and the Orcas play right off the shore there. This is where the kayak trips go but you can access it by car. Take a picnic and relax. Walk the beach trails. Rangers are very nice and informative.

Just read JoanruthB, a fantastic summary of the area. Yes, someone killed a pig and thus started the negotiations as to who the islands belonged to, England or the US. A beautiful area, English Camp was my favorite. The island is full of whale loving friendly people. Spend some time, I felt sorry for those hopping off the ferry and... More
