Opened in the summer of 2003, the Clay Center strives to present a variety of arts and sciences all under one roof. The Avampato Discovery Museum is two floors of fascinating interactive science exhibits, while the ElectricSky™ Theater features planetarium shows. In addition there are a large performance hall and a small black-box theater, an art museum, a fun museum shop, and a cafe. There's something interesting scheduled virtually every night here!

We love the Clay Center! The children's museum is a wonderful addition to the Charleston community. I gave 4/5 stars because wheelchair accessibility could be far better.

We have seen a lot of great shows here, but never buy tickets for the balcony. You will encounter people that are drunk, yelling, and who smell really bad. The staff will try to calm them but they should make them leave. They also need...More

I took my grandchildren here several years ago and we all enjoyed the science center and experiments and observatory. But they have taken it from a school age science center to a preschool exploratory center. It's a great place for preschoolers but my elementary age...More

I stopped here for the Luckey Climber. The climber was super tall and pretty. Kids had great fun with it. The kids science part was all about "gross" body parts which was just OK, the lower level was a town square with common attractions such...More

I took my 8 year-old niece here on her Spring Break in 2016, and she asked to return this year, which we did, in March 2017. When an 8 year requests to return somewhere, that doesn't involve spending a fortune or riding a ride, you...More

I recently saw the musical group Kansas at the Clay Center. First of all, let me say that the group still rocks. With a few new members, the group is poised to continue their brand of progressive rock music, for many years to come. Now,...More

My first concert for ZZ Top and it was awesome! The seating at the Clay Center was great. We parked across the street from the venue. Easy ingress and egress. Highly recommend the Clay Center !

There are also some kid-friendly restaurants on Charleston's east side. Heading east on Washington Street, you'll find a Gino's Pizza and Tudor's Biscuit World. Also on Washington, closer to the WV State Capitol, you'll... More

I suggest you keep an eye on the Clay Center's Facebook site. They had a free Summer Fun Day in early July. Last year, they offered free admission to military families between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
