No one was there when we were there at the beginning of October. Weather had hit that day and we discovered when we got there that the wagon ride had been cancelled for the day. Otherwise, to go to the lighthouse, you have to park, wade through water (that was about 6-8 inches deep when we were there) to get... More

Thank you for your review. Your experience reminds me of what life must have been like on an island as a lighthouse keeper. The Lake Michigan waters, even when I was young, were waist to chest deep. Years before that lighthouse keepers had to row their supplies out to the island on a weekly or monthly basis. Often times the... More

Thank you for your review. When the Bailey's Harbor Lighthouse began to fall apart, in the late 1860's, the decision was made, not to rebuild the deteriorating lighthouse, but to build a new lighthouse, on a piece of land, known as Cana Island. More

Off season so the buildings were not open. Still, this is a beautiful lighthouse, and the work to restore it and the island buildings is moving along well it appears. It's a pleasant walk across the gravel path from the parking are, though it would take a rugged wheelchair to make the trip.

Thank you for your review. In 2009 the Door County Maritime Museum, Door County Parks Department, and the Historic Structures Report project team identified basic flaws in the current buildings that hinder access by the public, limit interpretation, and cause general degrading of the building infrastructure over time that will, if left unaddressed, result in the loss of historic integrity.... Wonderful outing for the kids. Park on the mainland and walk across a pebble causeway to the island where the lighthouse is locate. Beware that on very windy days that waves may get your feet wet on the crossing.

Thank you for your review. Cana Island Lighthouse was built in 1869. Since the 1970’s, under lease from the U.S. Coast Guard, the Door County Maritime Museum & Lighthouse Preservation Society’s mission at Cana Island has been to maintain the light station and adjacent grounds. The 1869 resources of the island and light station are irreplaceable; a truly unique setting... More

We walked across the pathway from the "main land" to the island. The day was bright and clear. The old lighthouse looks to be recently renovated and was in pristine condition. There was a large placard constructed on the water side of the lighthouse that relates the history of ships, wrecked, at the bottom of the lake, about two miles... More

Thank you for your review. As modernization of light systems developed, the U.S. Coast Guard no longer had reason to maintain lighthouse properties and began to transfer them. In 2006, the U.S. Coast Guard transferred Cana Island to the Door County Parks Department, which named the Door County Maritime Museum as operating and historic preservation partner. Currently, five buildings remain... More

This is an excellent lighthouse but it was closed when I was there. The grounds and lakeshore of the island are beautiful. The causeway of rocks will allow you to walk 75% of the (1/8th of a mile) way to the island, but the remainder will soak your shoes especially if the waves are high. So bring wading boots or... Thank you for your review. A century of wind and water has taken its toll on the iconic Cana Island Light Station. No longer maintained by the federal government, the lighthouse upkeep now is under the guardianship of the Door County Maritime Museum. If we don’t step up to repair and preserve this lighthouse, it could disappear forever. But you... More

We visited this wonderful old lighthouse in October. We climbed the 92 spiral steps to the very top. The view of Lake Michigan was amazing! There is a lot of history to learn about it. Highly recommend a visit.

Thank you for your review. Our work at the Cana Island Light Station is not done. Our next project is the restoration of the out buildings on the property to include the oil house, privy and barn. Please see the Door County Maritime Museum's website for more information. More

Too late to go inside, but gorgeous none the less. Beautifully maintained grounds and the lighthouse itself is extremely clean and beautiful to look at.

To go up in the top, you have to pay an extra fee that's a little expensive for what it is. However, it's well worth it for a trip to the top of this gorgeous lighthouse. The views are truly spectacular. It's got wonderful grounds and gives you an impeccable view of the lake. It's a bit of a walk,... More

A bit of a drive to get there and a bit of a walk from parking lot, but nice lighthouse and park. Well maintained.

Thank you for your kind review. The highlight of any Cana Island visit is climbing the 97 steps of the tower’s spiral staircase to reach the gallery deck. The outside deck delivers a sweeping view of Lake Michigan and the Door County peninsula. If the lighthouse was closed for the season, please come to climb again in May. More
