The Smithsonian-affiliated Lyman Museum tells the story of Hawaii’s islands and people through its exhibits on Hawaii’s volcanic origins, flora and fauna found nowhere else in the world, Hawaiian culture, and other ethnic groups that have shaped the unique society of Hawaii today. Admire worldwide collections of sea shells and minerals. Learn about 19th century missionary life on a tour of the historic Lyman Mission House, the Island’s oldest wood frame building constructed in 1839.

There is a nice collection of rocks and shells including dioramas of wildlife. You can also tour the mission house next door.

We visited in June 2017 and part of the museum was closed off due to renovations. They should make admission a dollar or two off because of this. The actual museum was pretty cool. It was more about the environment of the Big Island/creation rather...More

This is a wonderful place to spend an hour or so while visiting Hilo. They have a nice collection of Hawaiiana and the dioramas are well done. I also enjoyed my time in the gift shop...

The Lyman Museum is a site that tourist should visit when on the Big Island. It educates you about the family who started this museum and about old Hawaii.

We enjoyed our visit. We arrived late in the day so didn't have a lot of time. There was a great photo exhibit. There was a film to watch - we didn't get there soon enough. Didn't tour the house next door.
