What a gem of a find! Along with a fantastic rock collection, there is a mission house tour and wonderful displays about the island. They also have an extensive shell collection.

Hilo is full of attractions none of which are huge, but together make a good day out. We went at a time to coincide with the house tour, which doubles the value of the attraction. Nice little gift shop too.

Didn't take the tour of the missionary house, which other reviewers found very interesting. I was more interested in the mineral collection, since Orlyman Lyman was known as a world class mineral collector, with over 30,000 specimens. I was only somewhat satisfied upon viewing, since...More

This is a small but very interesting museum. The mission house is very interesting and has a lot of historical information to absorb as well as amazing furnishing from the past. The main museum is small, but has one of the best gemstones and geological...More

There isn’t a lot to the museum since it is under renovation, but they have done their best by projecting a video that shows the closed exhibits. The mission house is interesting but the tour guide we had (a middle aged New Yorker) didn’t seem...More

This museum is really nice to visit. The house tour was great. Unfortunately, a lot of people from a cruise ship were at my tour and their bus was leaving so the tour guide was a little bit hectic. After the people left, she finished...More

Very nice museum. We enjoyed the information about the volcano's and the environment, but we really loved the tour of the house and the Docent was very informative.

This museum answered many questions I'd had about the natural areas around Hilo. We were disappointed that the history/culture exhibits were undergoing renovation because this was one of the only museums we went to. They did show us a great movie (of several they have)...More

Wonderful museum that focuses on both natural history (the mineral exhibit is spectacular!) as well as the impact the Lyman family had on the development of Big Island. Fascinating! Don't miss the tour of the Lyman home, or the gift shop.
