The Subaru Telescope structure was not open for tours, but the drive up was quite a thrill, and the views were awesome. This was on our must-see list for the Big Island of Hawaii, and it did not disappoint. I was surprised at how well...More

Easy 4x4 drive up, smooth gravel and very steep. Be prepared, its bloody cold, and very high up. Budget a 1 hr stop at the visitor center to adjust to the altitude. Surprisingly no subaru dealership up here?

If your health permits, no trip to the Big Island is complete without visiting the nearly 14,000' summit of Mauna Kea, where the Subaru (& other famous) telescopes are located :)) You need to have a 4WD or go with a tour group (2WD vehicles...More

There are thirteen telescopes on the top of Mauna Kea, but none are more spectacular than the Subaru Telescope, especially when viewed with the setting sun. At trip to the summit is well worth it (weather permitting), and I recommend taking one of the many...More

It's like being on mars. Just so cool. Cold, crisp and clear air up at the top of the world! Be prepared for altitude effects. Dizziness or nausea from lack of oxygen in the air.

Every month the mountain hosts a tour of local people and I got to go. There was that breathless quality of being on almost star trek adventure, visiting this telescope. Awe inspiring. Also, on top of the world.

It was a short but very interesting tour and definitely something to add to the list if you got to the very top of Mauna Kea. 4 wheel recommended.

You can't go inside the telescopes but the views are incredible. Go at sunset to get unreal photos. It is cold, very cold.

Most likely if you wait until you get to Hawaii to try to book the Subaru Telescope Tour, you won't get in, it usually takes a week or longer to get tickets. You also need to plan on renting a 4 wheel drive and getting...More

You've got a good answer. Enjoy the trip up to the top of Hawaii, and flying the next day is no problem. If you happen to be congested or have a head cold, I'd stay at sea level and drug up to clear your sinuses and get... More
