Don't tell the rental company, but my friend and i took our 4x4 Jeep Wrangler offroading to get here. The locals have a few food spots set up and ask for donations for maintaining the area. Or rather they charge to either shuttle you there or for you to drive yourself. The way I look at it is they are... More

It is a e mile hike one way to the green sand beach. You need good hiking shoes and a jacket as it can get very windy. You can drive a 4 wheel suv to the beach. The locals tried to deter us from doing that. Most of the road is easily navigable with a couple of tough spots only.... More

One of only 4 green sand beaches in the world (The others are in Guam, Galapagos, and Norway). It's not a huge beach, but it's not completely regulated and touristy like most of Hawaii beaches. If you don't want to walk 90 minutes each way, there's probably some locals that will give you a ride down there and back in... More

Gorgeous views from South Point! We arrived just before sunset and explored the area for some time, taking photos. We began hiking to the green sand beach but lost the light so we didn't make it. Green sand was all along our hike however. There's multiple unmarked paths to the green sand beach which require a 4WD vehicle. If you're... More

The ride from the Hawaii Belt Road is about 12 miles in each direction. It is mostly paved, but diminishes to a single lane with gravel shoulders about halfway there. When you meet an oncoming car, you each put one wheel in the gravel. Once at the end, there is a dirt parking lot with a couple of well-used porta-potties.... More

This takes a while to get to and once at South Point, there's not much to see (I have not been to the Green Sand Beach). Some impressive cliffs, with locals using them to jump into the ocean -- don't do this without asking the locals first or there is a risk the current will take you to Australia. It... More

We got to the location for parking, and its approximately a 3 mile hike from the parking area. There was a family group there, who wanted $15 per person to take you down and bring you back to the green sand beach. They were also selling drinks and snacks. For the amount of time you would spend visiting the beach... More

The beach was gorgeous. Getting there? Not so much. We opted into hiking to the beach and by the time we got back to our car, we were covered head-to-toe in sand. Due to the wind & sand clouds, our visit here was less than enjoyable as we spent the entire hike guarding our faces. Locals offer rides to the... More

Papakolea Beach, created some 50 thousand years ago by an erupting cinder cone (some experts say) calls plenty of people to its nestled stretch of green sand. Not all scientists agree about the origins, but what is agreed upon is that it’s a lovely beach; Pu’u Mahana, “warm hill” is a desirable objective provided some precautions are kept in mind....
