Was a rainy morning and we stopped at the park since there were still a lot of cars. Then checked the site on line and had to go see the pool despite the rain. Did put my feet in! Will definitely go back.

OK... To set the record straight... and as a point of reference, I live here. The charm of our area is the feeling of remoteness (yet easily in reach of main amenities in Hilo) or disconnectivity (from the madness that seems to be sweeping the rest of the world)... In light of this, we spurn large resort type developments and I doubt we would ever let one be built here. There is a wonderful "retreat" here right down by the shoreline called Kalani (sorry trip advisor won't allow me to include the url for it... just google Kalani, Hawaii) if you would prefer more of a structured accommodations - otherwise VRBO and AIRBNB have tons and tons of private lodgings from $50-350/nt with deals for longer... they usually have wifi... Another amazing "hotel" is the Volcano Village Lodge, check their website. My advice for visitors, and now that the lava is once again flowing within viewing distance of a short hike we are getting many more visitors... is this: Find a AIRBNB or VRBO or TRIPADVISOR lodging and book it for 2-3 nights, gives you time to explore this area here called lower PUNA... there is a host of historical and geographic sights to see... Volcano National Park is a day alone... (could be a whole vacation, there is SO much in the park) and of course Madame Pele's show. Our town of Pahoa is a wonderful example of an old Hawaiian plantation town - we have some wonderful restaurants and stores, all distinctly unique. Then decide where else on our island you would like to explore and choose a town central to those activities and get another AIRBNB/VRBO/TRIPADVISOR - One of our staples on the Big Island is tourism, so you can be pretty certain that if you get your listing from one of those I mentioned that you should have a great time. I would caution using private listings off Craigslist and similar as they are not monitored and accountable. That being said, traveling the planet I have had good luck with such... so... YMMV Hope this helps... Times: from Kalapana to Hilo 45min average, Volcano 1hr, Kona 2hrs, Waimea 1:45hrs
