NTBG’s Allerton Garden Garden is located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Tours run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore this former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

Allerton Gardens were beautiful, but $50 for a tour??

We went ahead and spent the money anyway. Hopefully 90% of the fee goes to preserving the gardens, because the tour itself is not worth that amount of money. Our driver/guide... read more

We went ahead and spent the money anyway. Hopefully 90% of the fee goes to preserving the gardens, because the tour itself is not worth that amount of money. Our driver/guide was entertaining, but a bit too laid back and lacked knowledge on many of the plants. Interesting sculptures throughout.

This is the creation of Robert Allerton who created art in large outdoor gardens and used them for lavish parties. The tour is as interesting for its history as it is for the gardens.

This is an amazing place - a verdant work of art with a fascinating story told well by our guide, John. In each of the landscaped "rooms," and around every corner was some awesome plant or tree, beautiful setting, cool fountain (including the one engineered to pulse at a rate to slow your heart). The tour ended with a simple... More

Since we wanted to do the Self-Guided Tour, we thought we could show up anytime, grab one of their shuttles, and be off. Didn't realize that shuttle service was so limited, and since we had saved this for our final day and had to catch a plane late that afternoon, no tour for us. I'm sure it's my fault for... More

The gardens are stunningly beautiful, and our guide was excellent as well. Go for the sunset tour to get dinner in the bungalow and great light for pictures.

We have been to Kauai many times, but for some reason have never visited the National Tropical Botanical Gardens until now. Wow, what an experience! Whether you are interested in biodiversity, manicured tropical gardens representing a lifetime of effort, or just scenes used in Jurassic Park - this place is worth your time. Easy to reach from most Poipu locations,... More

We did the basic garden tour and really enjoyed it. I loved hearing about the history of the Allerton men and viewing their outside living areas.

We opted for the sunset/dinner guided tour of the Allerton Gardens. The tour included a nice bus ride and then an easy walk through the fabulous gardens. Our guide was quite knowledgeable about both the Allerton/McBryde history and the plant materials used throughout the gardens. Dinner at the old Allerton estate house was light, but quite satisfying. Sadly, sunset that... More

Great visit!! The flora in Hawaii is incredible and the tour gives you having a greater appreciation for how the island came to be so diverse as well as the competition between the endemic and introduced plants. The Allertons left us such a gift - both the gardens and the individual rooms. Take the time to go see them. Our... More
