About
NTBG’s McBryde Garden is located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Tours run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore this outstanding garden, known for its diverse collection of tropical plants. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

Worthwhile immersion into Kauai’s flora history
Sep 2021 • Couples
A worthwhile 2 hour self guided tour of Kauai’s native and non native flora on easy to follow trails. Take sunscreen, bug spray and water. I wished more of the plants and trees were identified by signage or on the map/guide. Also expected to see a lot of different flowering plants but did not. Van driver was knowledgeable and energetic and price was reasonable.

Best of both garden tour
Good tours covering a lot of interesting plants. Many of them are stunning. The tour guide Sam provided some Hawaii history and stories along the way.

Very pleasant garden stroll

McBryde is a sister garden to the next-door Allerton Garden. Allerton only has guided tours, McBryde has only self-guided tours - which was why my family chose McBryde.

The shared parking lot for the 2 gardens was close to full for our mid-morning tour. A 15-minute bus ride transports the customers from parking lot to the actual garden (leaves and returns every hour). A docent greets the bus in the garden ang gives a short general overview - then one is on one's own to explore.

My family (with 3 pretty knowledgable gardners in the group) took a leisurely 2.5 hour stroll through the 200 acres of gardens. The plants are not well signed (which was a disapointment), and the 7 or 8 designated trails are really just different parts of a long pretty loop trail. All that said, it's a very serene way to spend 3-hours. Yes, I have seen more specacular gardens in my travels and I think the $30 per adult was a bit pricey for a self-guided tour, but overall our family enjoyed the entire time in the garden (even although it rained). Considerable native bird life added to the enjoyment. Two members of our 11-person group vote the garden the best event of our 9-day stay on Kauai (and we saw pretty well all of Kaui's sights!)

Great introduction to Kauai

My wife and I went on the waterfall tour. The guide was knowledgable, with a great sense of humour. Lots of stories to tell about local history, and some very beautiful views, including the waterfall.

great to wander, not so great guide

this is a review for the mcbryde garden only. my husband and i did not want to commit to the 3 hour guided tour of allerton, but wanted to do the self-guided tour. these gardens are only accessible by a shuttle bus, which is unfortunately driven by a "guide" who is very obnoxious, only talked about himself and his achievements, and his run ins with celebs. It's unfortunate, since the drive in is quite nice with amazing views of the beach, and a squeeze between two trees. once we got off the shuttle, we explored for about 45 minutes. that was sufficient time for us i think. we probably could've stayed there a little longer, but with the schedule it was either that, or wait an entire other hour to get a ride back. lovely gardens, well maintained. lots of maintenance staff and researchers.

Depends on what you are interested in.

Our guide on the bus ride down to the gardens was knowledgeable and willing to share information, which gave us a bit of a jump start on our self guided tour. We only toured McBride garden, but learned quite a bit about the plants and history of voyagers to the Hawaiian islands. Signs along walks explain botanicals. We enjoyed it.

Okay but not a must see

Gardens interesting and well labeled for plant enthusiasts but far from spectacular, clean bathrooms and nice staff but wouldn’t recommend unless you want a chill day.

we visited this garden in conjunction with Allerton gardens. It's well worth the time and money in my opinion.

Beautiful Gardens
Dec 2019
I love botanical gardens in general, and the McBryde Garden is a real treat. I've been interested in visiting one of the National Tropical Botanical Gardens (there are four sites on Kauai and one in Florida) and I finally got the chance during our visit to Kauai. If you like botanical gardens, this is a must when visiting Kauai.

Beautiful garden tour experience
Dec 2019 • Couples
We had a very interesting and informative guided tour at McBryde Gardens. We took the new Wailele (Waterfall) Tour. It is a great tour and highly recommended. We were fortunate to have Clayton as our driver/guide. Clayton is very knowledgeable on most subjects in the garden,  be it fauna or flora. He made the tour much more enjoyable. We even got up close and personal with several head of cattle, as we crossed some pasture land on foot, enroute to the falls.
In addition to the falls, we stopped at the Canoe Garden, the native plant garden, and the tree of life trail. Experiences may vary, as each guide will give you different looks at the property.
