NTBG’s McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden are located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Individual tours of each garden run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore these outstanding gardens. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world. Allerton is a former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

It's was late afternoon (about 4.00 pm) when we arrived at the gardens only to discover that you need several hours to explore with separate guided tours over the McBride and Allerton gardens for which transport is on hand. As a consolation we were advised...More

This is a research facility which covers 180 acres. You can choose a walking self guided tour or a guided one on a bus. We like to walk. The different zones of the garden are clearly demarcated, good signs and clear paths. The bus drivers...More

Learned a lot - who Allerton was, Queen Emma former owner of the area, many plants were introduced and not native to Hawaii, many film locations are here, including the first Jurassic Park and going all the way back to the old black and white...More

Well worth the time. Plus you get access to Allerton beach. Its a easy walk along the creek in the garden. The dinner was more than we expected and we were given some free time to explore the house and beach on our own.

Wife and I wanted to spend a few hours off the beach doing something a little different in a setting to snap photographs. Botanical Gardens were awesome, not crowded at all, and we spent a very nice couple of hours. We'd likely go again.

A Sunday morning adventure to see some plants and gardens indigenous to the island. We just wandered and enjoyed the scenery.

The guided tour lasts about 2 and a 1/2 hours. We visited yesterday and it was WONDERFUL. Our guide, Sorn, was one of the best we have ever had the privilege to accompany. He was both extremely knowledgeable and personable. The garden itself is spectacular....More

No the senior pass does not work because they are private. The Gardens are well worth the expense. The pass does admit your party to the Kilauea Lighthouse.

I believe the McBryde Gardens tour is more about the plants and a shorter tour. The midday Allerton Gardens tour takes well over two hours. Besides hearing about the plants you hear a lot of wonderful stories about the site... More
