This is a must-do for serious birders that visit Maui. You have to go through the National Park Service, or the Nature Conservancy or Maui Forest Birds to get in as it is closed unless you are with a qualified guide. This is a precious natural area, one of the few remaining old-growth forest areas remaining in Maui. It therefore... More

You must sign up for the guided hike here, but it's well worth if for nature enthusiasts. Pristine local habitat and endangered birds of Hawaii here. The hike leaves near Hosmer Grove at about 7K feet up in Haleakala N.P.

Something that I found interesting is, when Koa tree's leaves are starting to grow, a bunch of them start out small. As they start to grow larger they form into ark shapes. For the first part of the hike, it is downhill which I enjoyed. Though... More

It was a beautiful place to hike. Around every corner, there was something new to see. I learned about some of the native species. There are many different kinds of Ohia trees. And iviee is one of the birds that you may see! Organizations like Maui invasive species committee help plant plants that have been wiped out of areas. Some... More

I thought this hike of the Waikamoi Preserve was wonderful. A cool thing I learned when I was hiking was that you can eat the baby top part of a fern. I also learned that a long time ago before the invasive trees came to Maui and took over it was all koa trees. Another thing I learned about over... More
