great trail -- saw a large number of whales

moderate trail with some steep parts -- rocky and uneven in many parts. Beautiful views over the ocean with numerous whale sightings. Did the trail twice in a week. Bring water.

this is a very enjoyable short hike on the south side of West Maui - i've hiked it now a couple of times, both very recently. the hike is over a variably groomed trail - at times very smooth (so large stretches can be run), but much of it is quite steep with an irregular surface. that said, the footing... we are 29 and in good health, trail was steep in parts with decent flatter/resting spots. Definitely bring water but disagree on the need to be on the trail at 830 (probably depends on the season, new years it was fine) easily accessible on the inland side of hwy 30

Hiked up the east side of the mountain this year, trail starts just east of the Maui Ocean Center and is a very steep climb to get to the peak of this trail which is approximately 1600 ft ASL. The highest point of this trail will take you to a point between turbines 10 and 11. The trail continues down... More

This is truly an amazing hike, but do not fool yourself of you are not in good shape. It will jump up and smack you really quickly if you are not fit. You need to start early on the sun will get you. The Lahaina side is definitely easier than the Ma'alaea side. The wind can also be very fierce... More

After I did the hike I was told my locals that break-ins are common at this trailhead. We did part of the hike, the kids didn't appreciate the uphill cliimb so we didn't make it to the "peak". But we really enjoyed the views and the trail was really neat with field of lava rock strewn about. Would not recommend... More

First of all, get to the parking lot at no later than 8:30am. Too hot otherwise. Second of all, find the right dirt road/rocky road to the parking lot. If coming from Kahului, take Hwy 380 (Kuhelani Highway) south, turn left at the traffic lights on Hwy 30 (Honoapiilani Hwy). Go about 2km south on Hwy 30, and just after... More

Wear sturdy shoes, take plenty of water and be prepared to have the snot blown out of your nose!! This incredible hike is well worth the time as the views are magnificent! We started on the Lahaina side near Maalea Harbor and the climb is over mostly boulders and big rocks. Pay close attention to signs and arrows at the... More

This trail can afford some nice views, but it is a hassle because you need two cars. There is not much variation in scenery and it can get relly hot. There are much better trails on Maui. The Kapalua trails are a better West Maui resort area option and the Waihee ridge has more to offer on the other side... More

We did not heed the advise and did this hike in the heat of the day. Probably would have been more fun in early morning. We did however bring lots of water. I enjoy climbing over rocks and this hike had plenty of them. Some portions are steep but manageable if you take breaks. We did not do the whole... More
