We had lunch at Freshies and watch the glass demonstration at the glass store and walked up and down the street visiting the shops.

Quaint, cozy adorable town with lots of art galleries, unique gift shops and even a glass blowing shop. 1500 feet elevation on the way up to Mount Haleakala.

I don't know why Makawao is known as a cowboy town. It's charm lies in a slow stroll down Baldwin street looking at the buildings from the 1920's and 30's and reading about the Chinese and Japanese families who ran the shops back then. Oh yeah - and you get to wander into their modern replacements (clothing stores, art galleries, a great cookie joint, etc) and maybe spend money.

So much more! The food options are plentiful and interesting, the shops cover the gamut of fine art to fun souvenirs and even a general store. The people watching is a lot of fun and you might, for a minute, forget you are on Maui, until you feel the tropical sun on your skin and remember that nothing feels quite like this anywhere else.

We stayed in Makaweo snd ate there and walked around. It is the cowboy town. The downtown area has a lot of character. It is quaint. We ate at Casanova. Excellent Italian, nice atmosphere. I also wanted to checkout Komodo Bakery but it was closed. Sign said they were on vacation. Oh well, next time. Didn’t have time to shop. We were there in the evening, but lots of cute boutiques. Will have to return sometime.

Cute town to spend a an hour or 2 just to take a nice stroll, take in the essence of the town and get some cool souvenirs that is not from the ABC Store (don't get me wrong, I like the ABC Store too). The stores are super cute and my mother-in-law got me a beautiful necklace from Keani.
Nice place to stop that everyone can enjoy!

Stopped in for a couple hours prior to heading up to Haleakala. Amazing shopping. Several boutiques with unique items. Proprietors were so friendly and excited to tell you about the lines they carry. Tons of local products - including clothes and jewelry. Teen girls especially LOVED the shops.

We stopped by Historic Makawao Town to kill some time before heading off to the Haleakala sunset. It's an alright place to kill some time but we did not see anything interesting while we were there. Just the usual tourist gift shops and restaurants.

We stopped off here on our way to see Haleakala National Park. We stayed for about 45 mins, there were some little shops and a couple restaurants. It was cute, but not a ton to do. It’s good for a break to get out of the car though and stretch your legs.

This place was fun to visit. We made it a destinations stop but didn’t realize how small it actually was. There were probably about 10 shops to look in and a couple of food places. Then we went down the hill to Paia to eat lunch at a larger restaurant. We were there for only about an hour. It’s not worth the drive from Lahaina unless you add other things to do along the way.
