Refuge has been "mothballed" for lack of funding. Kiawe and cattails have completely taken over the former wetlands. Much of the water dried up when development above on the hillside tapped into the water table. There is no longer any habitat for the native waterbirds...More

Essentially a badly neglected fenced in marshy area overgrown with bulrush. No viewing platform, no marked parking area, and surrounded by private property. Visitors' amenities completely non-existence. The only wildlife you'll probably see are feral cats, and ugly ones at that!

We headed out in our 4 wheel drive jeep at about 9:30am and took our time, stopped many times along the way for pictures. What a beautiful, other side of Hawaii. The forests and vistas are breath-taking. If you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle,...More

Rent a four wheel drive jeep and drive up into the mountains and on top there is a lookout and bathroom facilities.

Stopped by the office to get info about rare wild flowers up in the bog. It was pouring so they said it would be really muddy and to bring a winch on the jeep!

Just saw my recent review re KAKAHAI'A WILDLIFE REFUGE and saw that 3 additional reviews were previously submitted. Unfortunately, all three were describing another destination other than Kakahai'a Wildlife Refuge! After reading their comments, it was clear to me that they were referring to perhaps the Waikolu Valley Lookout instead! I should know as I was born and raised in this neck of the woods! Furthermore, the picture supposedly of Kakahai'a submitted by "Alemaryll (July 2014) is a misnomer. It is NOT a picture of Kakahai'a but instead perhaps a scene of the north side of the island...if Molokai at all! Just though you should know. Call me at (808) 553-3778 if any questions. Bill Puleloa
