Alcatraz is great! So many aspects to it. Not just a prison. Civil war history, natural history, historic gardens, incredible views, great rangers. Don't miss the west side of the island for gorgeousness. If you're a birder, it is a major waterbird rookery from February through April. Totally worth it.

We had a great morning visiting Alcatraz. The audio tour of the prison block is extremely well put together and they did well to manage the flow of the large crowds so you get a great experience. Staff are friendly, and the tour is good value.

We took the ferry out of the piers. You should buy a coffee for the cold winds. Walk to the the ferry and on to Alcatraz. While on Alcatraz walk through the agave trail on to the main building there's a free audio tour that is a most. Ferry departs very often out the island. This trip is a most... More

Alcatraz boats leave from Pier 33 and takes 20 minutes each way. We walked the "agave" Trail around the west side of the island first. The audio tour lasted about 45 minutes and was well worth it and quite informative- but some of the information might seem a bit boring. The Native American takeover is quite interesting as well, and... More

Typically the tourist spots that everyone recommends fall short of expectations but Alcatraz was great. Loved the self-guided tour and really enjoyed roaming around the island on our own. Very cool experience in a place just dipping with history. We enjoyed the closing of the cells portion of the tour. I really wish we did the gardens tour, but we... More

On a visit to San Francisco in November 2016 we couldn't miss out on a trip to the famous Alcatraz Island and I am glad we didn't! I booked tickets in the October before going and for 2 adults it cost £58.61 in total. I clicked the option for to collect tickets in person one we were in San Francisco.... More

If you haven't been or are unsure whether to go... go!!! We had a great day, the free audio guide was so interesting and easy to follow. Only a short ferry ride so no time for sea sickness and a real educational experience. Amazing views from the island too!

Interesting to see inside and outside of the old buildings of Alcatraz and to hear the history if you like that sort of thing. We had what they call a 'night tour' but personally I would not call it a night tour. I had visuals of being there in the night and in the dark, but it wasn't like that... More

We booked tickets online about six weeks in advance, the boat trip over was a breeze, you must do the audio tour of the cell block it is very informative and easy to follow. We spent three hours on the island which included the cell tour and some walking around the island. an absolute must do activity.

Audio tour was fantastic and wandering around the island on our own was a plus. Go early as it gets very busy... would highly recommend this tour!
