We went to North Beach as it was close to the Beach Blanket Babylon Review which is well worth going to. Sadly the same cannot be said about North Beach. we had a Tuscan bean soup and a minestrone 5 out of 10 followed by a veal and the appalling ravioli. The veal was good but chef was too lazy to... Authentic Italian experience in San Francisco with many eateries beckoning with traditional fare...fun neighborhood to walk around in, peek into shops and bars and restaurants...has a distinctive flavor and harkens to the city's Italian immigrant experience.

Lots of stuff. Food. Strip clubs. Bars. Tattoos. Tourists. A bookstore. Memories. Candy. The past. It's over.

Once you exit the Chinatown area on Grant Avenue you will transition into the North Beach area. Primarily the area settled by Italian immigrants it still has the favor of little Italy. Lots of things to see and do and a great dining option. Enjoy

This neighborhood has managed to carry it's raucus freewheeling attitude from 150 years ago. strip clubs rub shoulders with hip venues, and around the corner is little Italy

We spent several days round here as our friends lived nearby, and our hotel was just on the boarder with Chinatown on Broadway. This area of San Francisco is so relaxed and has a village like feel to it. Fortunately, our friends who hosted us in the city took us round the various shops and restaurants of this neighborhood.

I admit, I may be influenced by the fact that I am part Italian American and have been to Italy many, many times. I love everything about the culture and the way of life - whether in Europe or in the U.S. North Beach is exciting, historic and just plain great fun. Everyone has their favorite Italian restaurant in North... More

Go for the Italian Food and Bistro in this area. Great experience! A' little Italy' it called. Although most of the Italians moved to other area, but the culture and feeling of Italy still there. Have a wonderful meal, coffee, and bakeries, and people watiching are all joyful !!! :)

We arrived in SF the day of the festival and spent the day wandering around the streets of north beach listening to the many music acts and having a few beers and food from the various stalls. Great way to spend the day if you have nothing else to do and wanted to chill in the city.

When in North Beach, I always feel as if I'm on vacation. There is a very mellow feeling in this area even though is is busy and thriving with many people. One of my favorite things to do here is to grab a slice of pizza and go to Washington Park and find a spot to munch and people watch.... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
